Why doesn't Montana have a wrestling program.

Montana is one of the best wrestling states in the country and we don't even have a D-1 wrestling program. Instead, all of our wrestlers have to go out of state or to MSU-Northern (National Champions). Last year's national college wrestler of the year went to a MSU-N kid, and we have had national champions from the state of Montana before.

We have so many wrestling prospects in the state I just don't understand why we instead have men's tennis, where we have to bring in athletes from Europe to play.

I know this is a football lobby, but give me your thoughts anyway.
 
They had a team in the 70's and mens swimming won conference year after year. I believe they were victims of title 9.
 
they were victims of title IX. I wanted to wrestle for the U and they shut the program down my senior or Junior year of high school. So that was '92-'93... To replace wrestling the University opened the Lady Griz Soccer team.
 
soooooooo, we should drop tennis (men's) and add wrestling. Which, do you think is a better Montana sport? Obviously, its a no brainer, we could become an elite wrestling program.
 
First of all Tennis is cheaper, the womens and mens teams can travel together, the Big Sky members have tennis but not wrestling programs. Ok 4 things why we have tennis and not Wrestling. If you want to pony up enough money to the U. Nothing will stop them from having wrestling. 200K a year for ever should get you a wrestling program.
 
In the 90's MSU, U of M, and Western all had college wrestling programs. When U of M and, MSU gave up their programs the kids went to Western or Northern.........Ironically U of M and Western both won national championships and I believe a year after both programs were gone. MSU was also gone at about the same time............Northern remains and is always in contention for Nationals and has won it several times...A couple weeks ago at the Rocky Mtn Classic or Jug Beck Classic North Idaho and Dickenson College had a dual during the tournament.....Both teams featured Montana Wrestlers (9 in all if my memory serves me right)

It is too bad Northern is all that is left in Montana.....

This board has been crappy for the last couple of weeks. IF YOU WANT SOMETHING DONE GO TO THE AD AND ASK HIM HOW MUCH. THEN WRIGHT OUT THE CHECK AND TELL HIM TO GET IT DONE.

IF YOU WANT THE REGANTS TO GIVE OUT LONGER CONTRACTS GO TO HELENA AND TELL ANYBODY WHO WILL LISTEN THAT YOU WILL DONATE X DOLLARS TO THE MONTANA U SYSTEM IF THEY CHANGE THE CONTRACT RULE. HECK THEY'D DO IT FOR LESS THEN YOU MIGHT THINK.

NOW SOME BODY WILL COME ONLINE AND TELL ME TO GO AHEAD. (Point being I'm not the one on EGriz bitching about the field house, 1-AA, wrestling ect. ect.)

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. I wonder what HORNET uses?
 
Well I know that the Utah schools (Utah, Utah State, and BYU) all dropped wrestling in the 90's just like the Montana schools did. The joke in Logan was that they should have dropped football and kept wrestling because the wrestling was good.

BYU was the last in Utah to drop the sport, the main reason given was that there were so few schools in the West that had wrestling anymore. The fact that there are now so few schools sponsoring wrestling anymore would make it difficult to bring the sport back. Unless, enough other schools in the West also brought the sport back. Tittle IX makes that difficult.
 
My PE teacher in middle school was a wrestler at UM......and remember all those title that Butte won back in the eighties.....those guys were great!

Griz could wrestle in the Pac-10, Fresno and Boise State do it.

Actually, it makes less sense what MSU is doing. Keep in mind, MSU still reaps the benefits of Title IX's rule that scholarships can be unequal when the number of males exceeds the number of females. Yet, the Bobcats go and add men's skiiing (for Title IX men's schollies) rather than wrestling.
 
i think they added mens skiing because they already had womens and in competition it's mens and womens combined for scoring. they last i heard msu was the only big sky school that was title 9 compliant. that may have changed.

Doesn't Utah Valley St sponsor DI wrestling?

Also, word is NDSU is forming a new wrestling conference with Air Force, Wyoming, SDSU, N. Colorado, N. Iowa and a few others

I’ve lamented for years that we don’t have a wrestling program. So many exceptional athletes. Hell, Havre sent Parker folios to Purdue a few years back. Imagine keeping guys like that in state. We’d have one hell of a program here for sure. I read somewhere once that the navy seals recruit wresting programs in Montana and Wyoming heavily because of the types of young men they find there. Just tough sons of bitches with a great work ethic and lunch pail mentality. I would m support a Griz wresting team and attend matches for sure.
