MBBALL Jedkins

People make mistakes. Some people make a lot. There are a few down the Bitterroot who are on their 5th or 15th DUI. Jedkins made one here. Here is hoping that he learns from his mistake.

I haven't the slightest clue how the program will deal with it, but it falls under the uniform guidelines the athletic department created about 10-15 years ago. What type of disciplinary measures might be issued aren't going to be handled until whatever legal proceedings run their course. Can DeCuire levy a punishment before hand? I think so for violation of team rules and such.

Most importantly the only thing that appears injured in this situation is Jedkins pocket book, legal record and his standing among his peers, teammates and coaching staff. Regardless of the scenario of what led to Jedkins arrest on a DUI, it should again serve as a reminder to not get behind the wheel when you are under the influence. Just call someone.

From several decades covering men's basketball, one of the foundational -- and least understood by the public -- principles of every coach (except one) I observed, was how invested in the lives, past, present and (likely) future... that Montana coaches have always made in their players. Point one: every player knows, before committing, the basic "contract" they sign with the program. The consequences of any kind of "violation" are clear. Point two: I'm pretty certain this issue has already been made clear to the player (and the team). I sure hope Jedkins remains with the team... in fact, the final decision is probably his to make. Montana coaches have always been "much more than a coach" with their players: it's what has made this such a remarkable men's collegiate basketball program since Jud (the first coach I interviewed).

There is no excuse for this given, especially with Uber and Lyft. Hopefully, Travis reads him the riot act, puts him on a tight leash, and gives him a second chance, aka Dick.

And DUI's are not taken lightly by a lot of employers !!! Recently, I had a young friend that is gay here in Billings inquire about his boyfriend applying for a counselor position at the regional youth service's center where I work part-time also as a counselor.

My young friend told me his boyfriend has a master's degree in social work, works at a Billings health-care facility as a social worker, but is burned out and seeking a change.

I told him great--his boyfriend sounded well qualified and gave him some application instructions for his boyfriend and mentioned almost as an afterthought that my young friend's boyfriend would also have to pass a criminal background check.

And that's when he told me his boyfriend has 2 DUI's, and I had to tell him after hearing this revelation that was disqualifying, unfortunately, for his boyfriend : ( !!!

Why are 2 DUIs disqualifying in Billings?

In BozAngeles, the same behavior results in promotions.

Why the double standard?
 
DUI's can be a lead anchor for people trying to get or keep jobs in education. Things have thawed a bit, but early on in my career a fellow educator was dismissed after his second year in the district for 'professional conduct' violations because of a DUI and a football coach from another district was suspended and eventually dismissed while he got a DUI during football season.

The same goes for government jobs outside of education, especially working in sensitive national security positions and working with at-risk youth. We have a CD counselor conducting AA/NA classes every week day because some of our kids 10-17 on both sides--JDC ( Juvenile Detention Center: youth jail ) and shelter-crisis care are already alcoholics and/or drug addicts.

That makes sense considering probably 90% of addicts began drug use before the age of 18. Very few addicts begin their drug use after the age 18.
