New GFP - UM President Jeremiah Shinn joins us (links here)

The was the most I’ve ever heard a President of UM talk about athletics and their importance to the university as a whole. It was very refreshing. Seems like a level headed, down to earth leader who can make things happen. This is an exciting era for Griz football and the U of M.
And he didn’t mention Kent Haslam once. That was interesting.

Just said he is still waiting for a facilities tour 😬

Please do get Stu Gore on to do a GFP discussing Soccer, England, and the World Cup... before Brint goes to Prague!

Loved insight on parents coaching, Luke's nuptials, fedora fashion, octupus in Greece, 4th of July in Shelby, and of course hearing Dr. Shinn. Splendid!

He actually mentioned Kent a few times, just not by name. Because he had no need to.

And to be honest, I would hope no new leader in any industry would discuss personnel on a podcast on his 3rd day of work.
I agree no leader with any sense is going to discuss personnel early on in their tenure plus Haslam just got his contract extended.l

Overall in-person impression of him (to me) is that he seems down to earth, approachable, and very much open for all discussions. We chatted before and after recording, talked about my middle daughter who is going into her sophomore year at the UM. Royce Engstrom struck me as a "stuffy academic" and Seth Bodnar the "guarded politician". Dr Shinn comes across as very authentic, I think he's going to fit in really well here.
I'm curious as to why you thought of Bodnar as a "guarded politician" Did you think of him that way when he was President?
Is that looking at him now as a politician? Is being president of UM a political job in many ways? Especially with many elected officials attacking liberal arts institutions regularly.

Regardless of how one feels about Haslam and BH now I thought Bodnar did a good job of bringing UM back from where it was headed when Bodnar took over.

I look forward to seeing if President Shinn can continue to keep UM growing as I believe Bodnar did. He's got a great opportunity with an exciting new coach who now has a decent contract for him and his staff. FB and athletics are an important part of the puzzle but certainly not the end all and be all.

bodnar hardly had um 'growing'. sure, his administration played with numbers to make it look like it, but the reality is it hasn't really been growing for a long time.
