We want to move up

Geminini
Most likely can’t afford to move up, look at Boise State, for how popular there brand is and all the money they bring in they fall short. MBB has 1 million revenue share and they were bad last year. Football has a 5 mil revenue share, WBB and W soccer have 200k revenue share mostly from local car dealers providing free car leases.

Give us the words. Not 10 minutes of a podcast. Edit: my son says there is not one word where Haslam says he would like to move up. NOT ONE WORD.
No, the words "I want to move up" never come out of his mouth. He does make several quotes that could imply he has definitely thought about moving up with the intension to do so. His demeanor during these quotes is positive and optimistic but then he speaks on the financial hurdles that would need to be overcome to do so and you can see his face turn from hopeful to doubtful.

38:43-speaking on the NDSU move up.
Kent "It is a good kinda litmus test for us to watch and see how they do it because we are so similar..."

39:24-speaking on needing an invite to the right situation.
Kent "You're absolutely right, you gotta have an invite. North Dakota State did have the real benefit of having a football only membership in a conference that allows them to keep all those other sports in a regionally based conference..."

41:29-speaking on why UM and MSU would most likely move together.
Kent "If you're a conference and you're issuing invites, you're not gonna split these two people up. You're just not gonna do it. It's too much of a driving force to what you do..."

41:44-speaking on an eventually move up when the P4/G6 split.
Kent "I still believe that we're gonna end up at the same stop light, were gonna end up at the same intersection 5 to 8 years down the road, because its clear to me that the power 4 conferences are trying to do some things differently, and at some point the rest of the group of 5 group of 6 might have to have that conversation of "ok what do we continue to do" and when that happens, we are poised to be right in there with those schools, and so wether we all get to the same spot, I think we will..."

43:00-speaking on NDSU winning con championships and playing in the national playoffs right away.
Colter "I think North Dakota State's gonna go compete for nat championships. I don't know how high a level they're gonna get to but they're gonna be competitive in the Mountain West right away don't ya think?"

Kent "I think they will be...the Mountain West just got better in football, I firmly believe it, I firmly believe it."

43:38-speaking on the top FCS teams ability to compete at the FBS level.
Kent "I hope they(NDSU) do well cus I think it will be a path and show that FCS football is really really competitive."

Thanks. I knew I was right on this.

My thought is Kent knows the cost will hold us back and he's hoping that when the split occurs, the G6 will allow the top FCS schools to join them at a far reduced fee, or potentially no fee.
Banking on a split of the G6 is risky as the split may never come, while other peer FCS programs have a defined athletic plan and fund raising goals. NDSU had climb the mountain. Maybe Kent has a plan but it’s hard to find and donate if you don’t know about it.

NDSU had maxed out at FCS. Attendance and interest were going down. Didn't have to move other sports to a new conference. Wasn't tied at the hip with UND. More big money available to be tapped.

To be fair NDSU has Bill Gates paying the bills while Montana has Town Pump.

"UM needs to be positioned to move up the moment an opportunity presents itself"

-- Inside the Den, et al.

Prove me wrong counselor.
First, I don’t believe you. You probably made that up. Give us the link.

That doesn’t say he wants to move up. Do you understand what the word “positioned” means? Do you not understand that there is no opportunity now?

Do you not recall that UM already turned down a WAC opportunity?

UM has been working to be in position to evaluate moving up, if FCS should start crumbling or significant realignment should cause UM to consider other action, for 20 years. No one has stated that on egriz more than I have.

Where has Haslam said he would move up if boosters weren’t holding him back? You said that. Proof it, Mr. Windmill Chaser.

Then how in the fuck do you know he hasn't said it on a podcast?

He's actually clearly on record as saying he believes UM should be FBS on multiple podcasts.
Because I have read what Haslam says, other honest people tell me what he has said, and he has not said that when I have talked to him about the subject. You are lying and exaggerating. Reduce a quote and a link to it.

Haslam always says that UM is currently at the right level at FCS.

“Does montana ad Haslam think unit of montana should be fbs in football

University of Montana Athletic Director Kent Haslam has consistently maintained that the Grizzlies should remain in the FCS rather than jump to the FBS.
While Griz Nation regularly debates whether the program has outgrown the Big Sky Conference—especially given Washington-Grizzly Stadium's elite atmosphere, robust season ticket base, and the team's regular deep playoff runs—Haslam’s stance is rooted in financial reality and the program's identity.
His position generally boils down to a few core arguments:
  • The Financial Model: Haslam has frequently pointed out that Montana operates on a highly unique financial model where home football gate revenue and local support sustain the entire athletic department. Unlike most mid-major FBS schools that rely heavily on massive university subsidies or "body bag" guarantee games on the road to balance their books, Montana prefers to keep its home games in Missoula because they are more lucrative than standard FBS payouts.

  • Championship Alignment: In his official communications—including his wide-reaching addresses to fans regarding the modern landscape of conference realignment, NIL, and revenue sharing—Haslam explicitly defines the program's top football goal as winning an FCS National Championship. He believes in positioning the university to play for national titles rather than fighting for low-tier bowl games in a diluted FBS landscape.
  • Regional Fit and Travel Costs: Jumping to the FBS would mean abandoning historic regional rivalries (like the Brawl of the Wild against Montana State) or forcing the entire athletic department—including basketball, soccer, and track—into a far-flung geographic conference footprint that would drastically spike travel budgets.” Gemini.

“Has montana ad Haslam ever said Montana should be FBS

No, Kent Haslam has never publicly stated or advocated that the University of Montana should move to the FBS.
Throughout his long tenure in Missoula (which began in 2012), his public messaging on the matter has been exceptionally consistent. Whenever the topic of conference realignment or "moving up" arises, Haslam has routinely shut it down, reinforcing that Montana is right where it belongs.
In fact, his official position has only hardened recently with the rapid changes in college athletics. In his wide-ranging address to fans regarding the modern landscape of the House settlement and revenue sharing, he explicitly mapped out the athletic department's four core objectives, defining their football goal unequivocally as:
"Win a national championship in football."
By keeping the focus strictly on competing for NCAA Division I FCS national titles, Haslam has kept the program aligned with a championship-or-bust identity, rather than chasing the massive financial risks and geographic instability required to join an FBS conference.” Gemini.

The Big Sky is working for the majority of the fan base based on ticket sales. Tickets to see the Griz in the FCS cost more than a lot of P4 programs and people are buying them.
