2026 Spring/Summer Transfers (3) Verbals, (1) Offers

Didn’t Gub play at 285?
Gubner played in a 3-3-5 defense, which is designed for smaller players, i.e. Alex Gubner. Not taking anything away from him, he was a great DT in that style of defense at the FCS level.

But Illinois State... they almost won, except they didn't. Look at how well the Griz did running the 3-3-5. They went to several NC's, except they never won.

No FCS team has EVER won the NC running the 3-3-5. Thankfully the Griz have moved on from the Hauck's chaotic, vaunted 3-3-5, and progressed to modern football with the 4-2/3, which the teams that have won the NC run/ran.

Now, with that said:

I'm not giving any of you new info regarding how the 4-2/3 relies on the interior tackles to swallow up blockers so the two remaining linebackers can fly to the ball.

My point of stating he should add another 20-25 pounds is because, once again not imparting new information, just supporting my statement, that the ideal Defensive tackle for the 4-2/3 is 6'2" to 6'6". They weigh 290 to 320+ lbs. They have are thick, bottom-heavy, and have a low center of gravity. A Defensive Tackle in a 4-2/3 defense needs the bulk to stop double-teams.

With regard to an ideal Defensive End, they don't need the bulk like DT's but need the height, length and speed The ideal Edge is 6'3" to 6'6". They weigh in at 245 to 265 lbs. They are all, lean, and and need those long arms and broad wingspans to help them keep offensive tackles away.

That is why is say he needs to ad 20-25 lbs. Are there players who are great that don't fit that mold? Sure there are. There are always exceptions.

Interesting. Seems to me that in a 3-3-5 it would be MORE imperative that the NT be a big, heavy guy and 285/290 lb guys would be better suited as DT's in a 4-2/3...Is he coming in to play DT or DE?

But what do I know?

Got to love adding more big men to the line. It seems like Carroll is turning into a pipeline for UM.

Admittedly, I don't know what you know. Sometimes I think I know what I know, but I might not know as much as I think I know, but you never know. You know?

No, I know.

I DO know that the Griz only went to ONE NC with the 3-3-5…the last 3 (losses) were all with a more traditional defense.

Yeah they went but did they win? No. neither did Eastern Illinois. Admittedly there are a lot of advantages to running the 3-3-5,m especially if you like chaos.

What's not my opinion is that there has never been an FCS team that has won the NC using the 3-3-5.

It is my opinion is that a traditional 4-man front is better than a 3-3-5 because it gives the defense more size and better control at the line of scrimmage, and shuts down the run game.

What is fact, like it or not, since Vigen installed the NDSU model at MSU, UM has not beaten them.

Agreed...but it didn't seem to matter WHAT D Bobby H. brought to the NC, he couldn't win it.

Was Vigen not using the NDSU model in 2023? Seriously, I don't know the answer to that...you know?

Your keyboard should be at least....3 times as big! 😂
Look, I have to actually look like I am doing some work while I screw off, so there is the strong possibility I will have typos when Bill Lumbergh comes walking by to check on my TPS reports. With that I bid you a fond adieu' for the weekend. It's now time to go chasing Bigfoot through the forests of West Virginia.
