A new era at UM! Welcome President Shinn!

I don't believe this is accurate. Do you have a budget that shows these numbers? I see that MSU got $2,000,000 in the last fiscal year when I googled, and my understanding is that UM and UMW get zero for any kind of "land grant" money.
MSU gets targeted federal funding for being a land grant institution it isn’t an annual blank check. I would assume their funding for being land grant has gone down significantly in the DOGE era.

I don't claim to be an expert, but the above user was claiming that MSU gets $10,000,000 annually. Google is telling me that the breakdown is as follows --

2024$2,400,000
2023$2,100,000
2022$2,000,000
2021$1,900,000
2020$1,800,000
2019$1,700,000
2018$1,600,000
2017$1,500,000
2016$1,400,000
2015$1,300,000

I could be wrong I didn’t research it I just thought that they probably did lose federal funding from DOGE since most science/research funding seems to have been targeted but I could be wrong.

What I found is Montana State received around $7m in land grant federal funding in 2024 broken down as follows $2.9m in Hatch Act funding. An example of where this goes is the Agricultural Experiment Station. $3m in Smith/Lever funding. An example of where this goes is 4H. There were a few smaller federal funding land grant programs outside of these 2 such as Mcintire-Stennis (forest research). The Montana state government also funded around $19m in 2024 to the Montana Agricultural Experiment Station per MSU’s website https://agresearch.montana.edu/impacts/index.html?

This put the combined funding for Montana State being a land grant institution at around $26m in fiscal year 2024 combining state and federal funding.

Thanks for the information. I didn't realize how many funding mechanisms there are that flow into land grant universities from different sources federally! All of that money is going directly do research, though, right? Its not going to their general fund or offsetting anything in the athletic department?

Some of the funding is legally restricted to research, extension and agricultural programs. Some of it is pledged to replay bonds/debt. It is not a flexible pool of cash that the university can redirect toward athletics. It does have a slight impact in that Montana State does not need to use as much of their general fund for something like MAES due to federal and state funding. This means they have more money for other aspects of the university including athletics, but it is an insignificant amount that would go toward athletics instead of MAES.

you'd be surprised how 'flexible' university administrations view any grant money. probably doesn't go to athletics, but some often gets siphoned off for 'pet projects' and the like. even the grantees themselves, the researchers, use the money in ways it isn't meant for, like luxury travel. i hated that, it's one of the main reasons i got out of academia.

Athens? Boulder? Madison? Austin? Ann Arbor? Oxford? SLO? Nah, fucking Bozeman. Who could resist the one street downtown and 75 phases of floorplans A-D of Aspen Creek Rock Pine Hills Estates?

Austin is so over rated compared to Bozeman. What college kid would even want to eat at 6 bbq joints listed in the Texas Monthly Top 50, listen to amazing live music at every bar downtown as well as historic venues like Austin City Limit & The Cadillac Club, or drink beer from award winning breweries like Jester King, Live Oak, Austin Beerworks?

They’re both overpriced and overrated. One is a frozen tundra half the year the other one feels like a steam room half the year. Take your pick. Both of them have inflated housing prices that don’t reflect local wages outside of tech.
