MBBALL Weber Moving On From Eric Duft?

I suppose we could wait for oldrunner (who posts often here) to comment. But a comment was just placed on the Weber State forum that Duft is, indeed, being "transferred."

Not certain about the timing of this move, but it's my opinion that the Wildcats -- given the youth of their roster -- should naturally be considered a strong contender next season.

This basically sounds like one of those "well, we gotta pay him even if we fire him, so we might as well give him a title and make him do something for the money" type decisions.

it is just life, but the wording seems...

"We are grateful for Eric's dedication to our student-athletes and this institution," Crompton added.

Weber State Athletics will immediately initiate a national search for the program's next head coach.

Some rumors on the Weber search

One hot name making the rounds here is Snow College head coach Andrew May. The Utah native has been at SC since 2022, and also been an assistant at BYU (his alma mater) and Utah Tech. He led his team to a 28-4 record this past season. Other names here include; Kentucky assistant Cody Fueger (he’s a Utah alum and has worked at BYU and Utah Valley), Utah assistant Donnie Daniels (was a Weber State assistant 2019-24 and has also been at Utah State and Utah Valley), and Washington assistant DeMarlo Slocum (had two stints at Utah, and played instate at Utah Valley – which was the Dixie State). Some current D1 head coach names here as well, but sounds like this could be the first wave.

I'm sure that Lillard had them look into Canales, but that is as far as it would go. Dame did not have a say in the final choice. 7 finalists were interviewed and Canales came out on top. There was a ton of interest in the job. For now, coach Canales is saying all the right things, he has a solid background, and he has a ton of energy. Time will tell, but I'm hopeful.

As far as coach Duft's new assignments, he is not in the chain of command, he is still an employee of the Athletic Department, his wife is still an employee of WSU as a trainer/physical therapist, his work will center around fund raising, NIL contract development, public relations and the like. Dame is still playing in the NBA and has little time to do those things. It might just work out for everyone. Time will tell.

Players..., it's going to be interesting. There are a lot of holes to fill. Coach Canales has a big job ahead of him.
