MBBALL Championship Game Thread

Tried to rely on building a program on one guy! Worked..didn’t work…and now tourney time didn’t work again.Even with Money sick. Need to creat an offense Travis!! Money leaving would be best for the program. Rebuild with something sustainable!

I’m sure we could sit here all night and wonder what might’ve been if Money didn’t get sick last night, and while that certainly was a bad break for the Griz, nobody else stepped up and took control of the game. Sawyer and Hicks had their moments, but they couldn’t sustain it for 40 minutes. For most of the game we became way too dependent on one player and that didn’t work out.

The offseason will be really interesting. Does Money decide to stay? If he does then just like Gillman in Football, he will have a chance to really re-write the record books next year. That said, with Sawyer graduating, we’re gonna have to bring in a big from the portal. Plus they’re gonna have to re-vamp the back court as well. No true PG killed us all year. I do think there’s a couple guys on the team that I wouldn’t be sad to see walk out the door, but we gotta retain the majority of these guys, and if we do then we got a chance to be pretty good next year. I’ll share more of my thoughts tomorrow but I feel like a lot of us are in agreement on the same issues.

Do we get an NIT or CBI invite ? I hope so : ) !!!

Although I wanted us to win, I also didn't want to see us get humiliated as a # 16 seed. I think 🤔 Idaho is going to get killed if they make the regular 64, but I am thinking 🤔 first the Spuds will probably have to win a play-in game given their dismal regular-season record to just make the final 64 teams ; ( !!!

Hate to be negative but I don't think we will be selected for the Nit. Maybe CIT.

Doesn’t it cost the team $30k + to play in the CIT and gets almost 0 recognition. If they have the extra money wouldn’t UM be better off putting that money towards the collective to improve talent level?

Most likely yes. But I was just saying what tournament they may get in. Not that I would want them to spend the money to play in it.

I'd prefer if we just got a move on with the offseason.
Basically a trade-off, depending upon what the staff thinks will most benefit the program. Certainly not "exposure," I would say. But NCAA rules allow more legit practices, and the team gets PT against outside competition. That's good ... IF the staff thinks the Portal won't kill them. Personally, I don't give a fig, but it's not my call.

For as good as Money was in the tournament, what made it work is that he got help from his supporting cast in Games 1 and 2. Last night?

Tyler Thompson: 1-4 and 0-2 for 3pts
Kenyon Aguino: 1-3 and 0-1 for 4pts
Grant Kepley: 2-6 and 1-3 for 5pts
Tyler Isaak: 1-6 and 1-5 for 3 pts

Money had 19, Sawyer had 19 and Hicks 11.

UM was 6-25 from three. Money had to work and didn't have the horsepower get all the way through what ended up being a pretty smart strategy by Idaho. Those guys that I mentioned above needed to pull their weight and just couldn't. Wasn't for the lack of trying, but they couldn't find a unit that could work against Idaho in that 4v4 look. Money didn't have the energy to do what is the normal tactic to get rid of face guarding (running through singles and doubles) and you couldn't involve him in the offense unless it was off the dribble. They ran some motion stuff at points but clearly Moneys overall energy level (you could see it on his face) just wasn't there to do that for 40 minutes.

Give total credit for Idaho for being able to execute their plan and getting good play from their supporting cast when it mattered. They were deserving of the conference tournament crown.

Proud of the group for making it to the title game and they did give themselves a chance to win, but didn't have the gas to get over the hump. They could have folded after what was a really strange and discombobulated season. Thanks to the players and staff for all the hard work and effort they put in this season.

Again congrats to Idaho. On to next year.

A couple of the Griz players must be practice players of the year or something for the amount of time they saw the court….because I’m sorry, but some of those guys just look like they should be playing division two. Turnovers ball handling ability and shooting just did not look like they belong at this level.

Courtney Anderson
Again congrats to Idaho. On to next year.
Tyler Thompson: 1-4 and 0-2 for 3pts Freshman
Kenyon Aguino: 1-3 and 0-1 for 4pts True Freshman
Grant Kepley: 2-6 and 1-3 for 5pts Soph
Tyler Isaak: 1-6 and 1-5 for 3 pts Junior 1st JC transfer

Last Year

Mailik Moore- Now 3rd leading scorer for Big East Team, Junior played in 84 games before UM
Kai Johnson- Grad Transfer played in 84 games before coming to UM
Joe Pridgen- Played in 87 D1 games prior to UM
Brandon Whitney- Ended up playing in 151 games. All Time assist leader.

This group was so young. Griz need to do whatever they can to keep Thompson and Aguino they both are what 18-19 years old? They are going to be flat out studs. Kepley and Isaak have potential to be solid contributors. Courtney Anderson started to look really good before injury and would have helped. I have no idea what the deal was with Betts..battling through injuries the whole time? I hope Money stays but would undertand if he leaves. I really like Hicks I think if he stays he could be one of better players in conference. Need to bring in some size.

Don’t agree with keeping Kepley, turnover prone and out of control. Issak was brought in to play the point and be our 3 pt shooter. Did not excel at either. He’d be a senior next year. Need to go with a proven so. transfer if there is one. Not to flame either player but they do not seem to fit system.
Losing Pridgen hurt more than anything. He was an emotional leader as well as a great rebounder. I don’t think we had a true court leader this year. That was evidenced by our hot and cold game performance.

Pridgen is/was one of those rare individuals with the on-court leadership skills that could keep his team focused on the game plan. Watching him in game huddles was pretty incredible, because -- I swear -- he also kept the coaches focused. I wonder if he's ever thought of being an assistant coach somewhere.

Nothing but mad respect for Money. If he felt half as bad as I did a few months ago when I had the stomach virus, it's amazing he was able to play at all. Hell, I couldn't get off the couch. Guy has been through hell already in his life, but he's an absolute winner, and will go down as one of the greatest GRIZ ever.

Hats off, Money. Well done, and thank you.
