Enrollment Up Again

Speaking of Yale, when my son (UM grad) was interviewing for an MSTP position, the interviewer at Yale (14th ranked med school at the time) had the nerve to ask him why he didn’t go to a better school for his undergrad. My son’s response was that he went to school where he (we) could afford it and the majority of his professors had Ivy League credentials but chose to live in MT for the quality of life. Yale interviewer said “ I really think that will hold you back”. Son ended up at a MUCH higher ranked med school.
I LOVE that!!! And, yes, he (your son) sure did!
F that Yale douche.

I’m not nearly as accomplished as your boy, but I had a damn interviewee say something similar once. A bunch of prospects had a day of one on one interviews with like 12 partners and a couple of us associates. I have a Griz helmet in my office, and this dude asked about it. Told him I went there, and he laughed. Said something like, “That must have sucked going to a school like that.” I brought it up in the hiring meeting. He wasn’t offered a position.

Good place to put this. Daughter is a senior in high school out here in the Seattle Metro area. Got a mailer from NAU about two months ago. Today, one from MSU showed up.

No UM mailer yet.

Why would she get one from UM? Looks like lower level schools are contacting her. Ha.

I know you are joking, but still disappointing to see UM get outworked by it's peers.

In addition, she's in Running Start, so technically already a college student.

Not withstanding UM's lack of action, it is confusing that she is receiving NAU's and MSU's so late in the process. Doesn't she have to make a decision in 2 months - May 1st?

NAU reached out months ago and she got accepted, but has not committed. Apparently MSU has been emailing her (didn't know that) for a while as well. I simply saw the MSU mailer today.

What sport does your daughter play?
Badminton! U of Washington would be her best bet to make a college team, but she got a late start compared to the other girls. Made good progression against them during high school league play but still needs more progress. Hard to fully close the gap on girls that have been playing since 6.

That's super cool! I love that more schools are making more interesting sports accessible. I always felt so limited in athletics and boxed myself into pretty specific sports because they felt like you could do them at the next level. It makes me feel good to know that :)

Agreed. It's a no cut league but schools have a varsity team. 6 Singles and 5 doubles teams. Varsity gets you a letter.

The league has around 20 teams in the Seattle metro area. Some schools have over 100 players. The best part is after the "official " games have been played. You see different high school players/family pairing up just to play another game.

The major difference between UM and MSU is that MSU has an engineering school and UM doesn't. STEM education is hot, and many high schoolers head to college thinking they will major in engineering. After a semester or two, reality catches up with them and they change majors but stay at the same school.

There’s other components to STEM that UM excels at. They need to take back the narrative that’s been slanted towards one aspect and show why we have R1 status and excel in the sciences as well as the programs that set us apart from that school over the divide. How this narrative has been sold to Montana high schoolers and been allowed to perpetuate for so long is crazy. Especially when a majority of those students won’t even go into engineering or pass some of the prerequisites.

No UM...

Is she interested in UM? What about msu or nau?

My kids got hundreds of said mailers...all and I mean 100% of them are now in a landfill somewhere.

I'm not suggesting mailers don't matter, but good grief - sometimes being proactive is better than going on the interwebs to complain...

If she want to be a Griz - will take her about 2 minutes to fill this out.

Totally agree. Got my BS in Microbiology from UM. While I don't work in the field, the education I received has opened many technical doors for me.
