This is what needs to take place for a break/split off.
Only way it works is if P4 breaks away totally from the NCAA, uses NFL as a model, and has its own executive team with real authority whose only purpose is to do what’s best for the group as a whole. Salary caps, collective bargaining, real contracts with real transparency. And they become the PCAA, the Professional Collegiate Athletic Association, and have their own playoff system for the PCAA National Championship.
The best chances of it happening is when a major television contract comes up, and somebody has enough brains and leadership to say we’re going to represent all four powerful conferences instead of just their own.
They would have to do this, at least in beginning, one sport at a time. So they would begin with the one that already has the most freedom from the NCAA and by far the most money: P4 football.
Then probably G5 FB. Then probably P4 MBB.
If the rest of the schools can stay part of the NCAA, money is still available. But not nearly as much as there is now.
If a player is good enough to get paid real money, he needs to get recruited by and play in the PCAA.
[This was pieced together, so may not be quite right or clear]
