The Griz are the biggest sporting event in the state. Compare the prices to seeing the biggest sporting events in California, Utah and even Idaho. The Griz tickets are reasonably priced based on this.

That is the main source of revenue to support UM athletics. Other schools don't need that revenue. This is what puts UM at a financial deficit when looking at the feasibility of moving to FBS. Anyone saying demand is missing the boat.

I will have several season tickets available this year for my section if you need any? They are not cheap at $813 each.

No sir. Couple of the people I usually have with have a bunch of family life issues, so They aren't buying seats this year.

Ha! You haven't been to unco lately... They make sac state expensive.

That explains why tickets to our games are so high. Not so much why other schools are so low. Other schools are low partly due to less demand but also due to state subsidy which UM gets less of.

I remember back around 2001, the state legislature made funding of athletics equal between UM and MSU as it wasn't before that. But, George Dennison decided to take that money and put it in the general fund instead leaving UM again at an imbalance with MSU in state funding support.

Other schools would charge more if they could. They aren’t selling out like UM is.

I don’t know enough about the behind the scenes of UM’s athletic department to really know but it sounds like no from what I have heard. Both things can be true that UM has to charge what they are to fund their program and the reason why some other Big Sky teams in comparison charge way less is because they don’t have the demand to charge higher prices. I am sure they would all rather be thriving with more money as athletic departments than just sustaining.

Dennison was uniquely creative in finding ways to use the AD as a cash cow for his legacy programs, mostly buildings with his name on it. He recognized donors for the AD were easier to find than donors for his legacy. He charged rent for facilities even when the AD had generated the capital. He designated all game concession profits to the food service so he didn't have to support it from the general fund. Similarly, the significant logo and gear profits were designated to the bookstore. The only administrative support to the AD was scholarships and he booked them at full value to inflate the numbers when they were in fact incremental. All this created a rift with his aggressive AD, Wayne Hogan, who wanted to grow the AD and didn't take it silently. It cost him his job as Dennison did another creative trick with the books and bingo, the popular Hogan had a million dollar overrun in the AD which Dennison ensured was transparent to the media. Enough to run him off. A shame, Hogan was a great AD.
