Coaching movement

I thought there were around 10 “protected” roster spots beyond the 105, but if a “protected” players transfer out that spot is lost.
Isn't it only grandfathered walk-ons, not protected roster spots? Or, are you saying the Griz have 10 grandfathered walk-ons?

I thought Kent said if the Griz had above 105 prior to House they you could keep them (walk-on or not), under “protected status” to prevent a bunch of kids from getting the axe with no place to go. But once those guys work through their eligibility those spots go away and you’re back to 105. The downside is, if any of those players transfer out, the protected overage is lost but gained by the school they transfer to. The smart play was to designate young players who aren’t likely to transfer out so you can stay above 105 as long as possible.

Didn't hear what Haslam said. This doesn't seem right to me, from what I've read, but I don't know. Thx.

Why wouldn't be getting transfers late in spring work? I know the Portal wouldn't be available to facilitate identification and transfer. But after the school year, a player could look around if he wanted to put in the effort. UM could "advertise". "UM looking for giant DL guys. Scholarships available."
There’s this 7ft 350+ pound guy on campus, he should try out for NT spot on the roster

Don’t disagree with that at all. But, as I’ve pointed out elsewhere, we have until fall camp to bring in people.
Just plug in whoever fits best in the upcoming scheme. The concerns about our personnel being tailored to the 3-3-5 are way overblown. Is it ideal? No. But we can’t delay in putting that ridiculous scheme behind us. I say rip the bandaid off and move forward to an even front, guys will/should improve as the season progresses. If they don’t, try again next year with some new guys and obviously potentially new coaches.

Again, I like the 3-3-5. It's not ridiculous at all.

NOT impressed with the ex-bloody T****n defensive coaches hirings. The Bloody birds D was ass the last few years, and now those folks are here… nope, not real impressed. I hope I’m incorrect and the defense is a strength of the team, but I’m not optimistic at this point.
EWU's defense was near the bottom in defensive efficiency before Sanders became DC and rose to #5 last year.

The reason very few programs run the 3-3-5 isn't a coincidence. Any team with a physical offensive line and a competent coordinator figured out you could just run it straight at them. The scheme you're defending gave up 439 rushing yards to the Cats in 2022, their first 13 plays were all runs and we couldn't stop it. Then 326 yards in 2024, and 241 in the playoff semifinal this past December. The Cats didn't need to scheme around the 3-3-5. They just handed the ball off. Defending that scheme when those are the results against your biggest rival is a tough sell.

You can’t run it straight at a 320 pound nose and 280 pound DEs.

At this stage in the game (it’s almost March) I’m actually quite impressed we landed a DC with FBS experience, NFL experience, and Big Sky experience. I think we are all getting wrapped around the EWU. If we all saw his resume and the blacked out EWU we’d all be pretty impressed. Again it’s not like we had our pick of the litter here at this stage in the game. Also coming to coach with a guy who only has a one year contract. I’m actually really impressed we got some of these guys.

If you got the impression I wanted to keep the 3-3-5 in any version for any amount of time you misread every single post I’ve ever made.

How did the cats do against that defense in '21 and '23?
