I've got a wicked head cold but realized that tweeting out all my thoughts on their upcoming financial challenges to pull this off just wont cover it. Put up a substack post tonight:

Really good read. It sounds like Dr. Wood's mouth has written a check that Pam State can't cash (figuratively and literally). I wouldn't be shocked if he loses his job within the next 5 years. NDSU payed less to join a stronger conference with much closer conference road games and they have the pedigree and resources to be more competitive immediately. I am curious when they're getting media revenue. This looks like a car crash that you see coming and can't look away...

There we claims that they had around 50 million promised/saved up to help them move up to FBS when this first started, I believe for the PAC. I don't believe they got that full amount but based on the deal they agreed to I'd have to imagine they got enough to cover this or as already mentioned they're screwed. With Wood's brother being the Chair of the Comitee I wouldn't be surprised if they were able to wrangle the $$ for this.

The MAC travel is going to be brutal on the budget. Flying teams back and forth across the country isn’t cheap, and those costs can easily climb higher than what they’ve projected. They’re not getting a dime of conference revenue for the first five years, which basically stretches out the financial stress window even longer. realistically, their athletic budget has to grow a lot if they want to keep up with FBS‑level coaching salaries, facilities, and recruiting expectations.

Sacramento State can make this work, but only if the long‑term revenue boost they’re banking on exposure, buy‑game money, donor growth, and increased enrollment actually comes through. Right now, they’re taking on a massive financial gamble with a pretty lean budget and trusting that the FBS spotlight will pay off.

Well if Sac does crash in this and they need to drop down again I can only hope the BSC would not invite them back. But who knows who all is even in the BSC in 5 years. Maybe Sac can join a different DIV II conference as I’m sure we will be in one as well. Sad but true!

I get the frustration, but the whole Sac State will crash and burn and the Big Sky won’t take them back thing doesn’t really match reality. The Big Sky isn’t exactly some rickety old shed about to fall over. It’s actually growing, adding Southern Utah and Utah Tech in 2026 and bumping the league to 11 full members. Funny how that works for a conference that’s supposedly on life support.

national analysts aren’t treating the Big Sky like a charity case. HERO Sports literally called it the strongest top‑to‑bottom FCS conference in the country.

So no, the Big Sky isn’t curled up in the corner begging for scraps. If Sac State flames out in the FBS which is totally on the table, the Big Sky wouldn’t be doing them a favor by taking them back. They’d be regaining a big‑market school that fits the footprint and boosts the league. Whether they choose to take them back? Different story.

But the idea that the Big Sky or the FCS is collapsing? That’s just wishful thinking from people who want to move up just to say we are FBS with no viable way of making it work.

If Sac crashes and burns under the financial hole many believe this will dig, I think there would be a better chance they drop football than fall back to FCS level.
There are reliable estimates that California spends between 20-30 billion dollars on illegal immigrants; 25 million dollars is chump change in comparison. If the BOR were going to cut that president loose they never would have let him sign off on this MAC/FBS move. They could have stopped it at many junctures along the way.

What a useless post.

Helen I was just trying to explain the economics of the situation but I'm not a bit surprised it's beyond your comprehension. Maybe your husband can mansplain it to you.
Except one has nothing to do with financing the other...so no, you weren't. I would suggest your wife explain it, but she is your wife, so couldn't be too bright.
