It is silly, but, in my defense of the post, I posed the question prior to the press conference. This entire post is silly.
We just had the official intro of Bobby Kennedy yesterday and already people are looking to replace him.
One year contracts for coaches in Montana in any sport and any school are nothing new.
Kennedy said in his presser yesterday that his is his last job and after saying how it was nice to have transparency, did the fact that he said he wants his tenure to be a long one get lost?
Lets see how 2026 turns out before we start rolling out names for a replacement at least.
| Montana State | -120 | 54.5% |
| Montana Grizzlies | +250 | 28.6% |
| Villanova | +500 | 16.7% |
| Illinois State | +600 | 14.3% |
I'm just bored, I love prognosticating and math.Yeah, this is crazy. Griz fans are unhinged
What’s silly is having this discussion when BK has stated winning the Montana high school recruiting battle is a top priority. What are high school players going to think if our own fan base is only giving him 1 season? It is silly, but, in my defense of the post, I posed the question prior to the press conference.
Maybe you know the last time we had a HC with a one year contract? I don't, probably Mick Delaney?
Also, while Bobby Kennedy might say it's his last job, that certainly doesn't mean he is going to be at UM more than a year.
It's not silly to talk about who could replace him IF things don't come out smelling roses. He did say he wanted his tenure to be a long one. I hope he is wildly successful. Like everyone else, I hope the Griz win at LEAST the BSC next year.
Prior to Coach Hauck retiring, the opening odds this year for UM to win it all sat at +250 or 27%.
ODDLY!!! After running the numbers (AI research of the bet makers), with Bobby Kennedy (I specifically researched with him as the new HC) those number increased!
The odds of the Griz winning the 2026 National Championship are now 28.6%.
Unfortunately, with Coach Hauck's retirement, the puds chances of repeating went from +110 or 40.3% to -120 or 54.5%. That sucks.
But your're right. Thos post is silly, and none of this matters... because it's all hypothetical, but that's the fun part of it, and it gives us something to talk/speculate about. The off -season is too long.
Btw, here are the results I got:
Montana State -120 54.5% Montana Grizzlies +250 28.6% Villanova +500 16.7% Illinois State +600 14.3%

Note: Odds for Montana have fluctuated between +250 and +700 over the last two months but stabilized at +250 following the official coaching transition.
Pretty sure my position on the whole "Montana boys" thing is known. Idc if they are from Montana or Keppler-12, I want the staff to recruit the best players who will give the program the best opportunity to win championships again regardless of where they come from. We didn't give him 1 season. Haslam signed him to a 1 year contract. That speaks to itself. What’s silly is having this discussion when BK has stated winning the Montana high school recruiting battle is a top priority. Are you new here?New coach was officially announced yesterday and by the end of the day there's already a thread discussing who his replacement will be next year. Rough gig.
Solid point.....Are you new here?
“Theirs is not to reason why, theirs is not to make reply, theirs is but to do and die…” someone is feeling fatalistic today
While I think it's silly to get too worked up about a hypothetical coaching search that hinges on what happens this season, I also think Griz fans need to realize that the bar for keeping coach Kennedy after this season is pretty high. It's essentially the exact same staff we've had (with one major subtraction), so simply saying that he's going to recruit Montana harder than Bobby did isn't likely going to save him if he goes 9-3 and the appetite of the fans is for real, substantive change. That's just the reality, and we're gonna have to accept that it probably comes with turnover of players. What’s silly is having this discussion when BK has stated winning the Montana high school recruiting battle is a top priority. Not retaining him and the staff after a 9-3 season would mean giving up on Ah Yat and Gillman’s last playoff run together before it even starts, I don’t see that happening. I think if the team makes it to the second round of the playoffs or further BK and the staff will be retained for next season. I think it could just be making the playoffs instead of the second round. If the team doesn’t make the playoffs and loses in Bozeman then I think there will be a national search that will result in many players and coaches leaving. While I think it's silly to get too worked up about a hypothetical coaching search that hinges on what happens this season, I also think Griz fans need to realize that the bar for keeping coach Kennedy after this season is pretty high. That said, they can say they're making Montana the top priority, but I'm gonna need to see it. And the shitty thing is that if we're, say, 4-3 in October, recruits are probably gonna already know he's not sticking around.
That said, I hope he wins every game and we steal every top Montana recruit from ever setting foot in Bozeman. It sure makes everything much easier that way lol
Trust me there is absolutly no way Roehl is the coach at Montana in two years.. he is in his first year as oc at Iowa State and would have to take a massive pay cut to take the head coaching job for the grizzlies plus it's alot more expensive to live in Missoula than where he is now.Roehl loves the Montana football program, raves over it.
There is a way if he gets fired from Iowa State. Otherwise there is no chance with how big the pay cut is. Offenses are fun in the Big 12 too.Trust me there is absolutly no way Roehl is the coach at Montana in two years.. he is in his first year as oc at Iowa State and would have to take a massive pay cut to take the head coaching job for the grizzlies plus it's alot more expensive to live in Missoula than where he is now.
He lived next door to my nephew in Harwood North Dakota for a while so I know his family a little bit, pretty good guy....Montana won't be his next job.
Gillman is a senior. This is his last year. Or are you suggesting I'm saying they'll fire him before the playoffs? Clearly they won't, I just mentioned the regular season record. Not retaining him and the staff after a 9-3 season would mean giving up on Ah Yat and Gillman’s last playoff run together before it even starts, I don’t see that happening. Well that's ridiculous. He gets ONE year to do what it took Bobby 5 to do?I think he probably has to beat the cats and get to Nashville to get renewed. It almost feels like a certainty that we’re gonna go in a new direction for 27. With a new president incoming, that will be a good time to hit the reset button.
The Beav's have a new coaching staff. Ja'Marcus Shephard is the new HC, and has assembled a very good, experienced coaching staff. The Griz will not be facing the Oregon State team from last year.
I am questioning our HC a little. I think, after the presser, we are all aware he is a "players coach". That's great. I am leery after Kennedy evaded the questions regarding anything new scheme-wise, if he was going to bring in anything different. He is going to let Pease do Pease and Cooper/Hauck do Cooper/Hauck? Is he capable of taking the reins and making playcalls or is he going to leave everything up to the OC/DC's? I get that a HC is a manager and leader, but I would feel a bit more comfortable knowing the new HC actually had some ideas about HOW to win championships. The 3-3-5 is not a championship winning defense. It's a band aid at best. Pease did a good job with the offense, but UM lost quite possibly the best RB's coach they have ever had. Who is he going to get for a STC? Is he going to address the elephant in the room with S&C? Who will the new WR's coach be, he will not be able to manage the entire team AND coach WR's exclusively.
Tese are the reasons I am writing Oregon State off as a definite loss. Bobby Kennedy is not Ja'Marcus Russell, and Tim Hauck is not Mike McIntyre. I will call the game right now and say it's going to be a 21+ point loss.
Seriously.New coach was officially announced yesterday and by the end of the day there's already a thread discussing who his replacement will be next year. Rough gig.
Comments like the one you responded to helpWell that's ridiculous. He gets ONE year to do what it took Bobby 5 to do?
It just feels like they're ready to hit the reset button on the program after next year. I think anything similar to or worse than what we did this past season and they'll make a change.Well that's ridiculous. He gets ONE year to do what it took Bobby 5 to do?
