Portland St General Manager

Thought this was interesting. Wonder how many other BSC schools have done this and if we'll hire one after Bobby leaves.

sac state named shaq their volunteer general manager a while back. i doubt he does much, but his name alone draws attention to sac

This actually made me laugh: ""I'm coming home to Portland State to reignite the Viking spirit and build something bigger than the scoreboard—a fearless culture that serves as a conduit to our community, restores pride across our city, reconnects our alumni brotherhood, and aligns us with brands and businesses that will shape a sustainable, athlete-first NIL model," said Floyd."

“Build something bigger than the scoreboard” is an interesting statement. Considering how PSU has been the last decade, something other than the scoreboard sounds about right.

Reminds me of "RTD" lol

Shaq's title only pertained to the basketball program. They have had a football GM in place for a year or two and they just hired a new one when the previous one took a much higher paying job.

We have a GM? Besides Bobby?
Yea, definitely! Jimmy Morimoto. He isn't Bobby's boss, but is theoretically in charge of non-football related roles. I'd imagine in practice Bobby is guiding that role, too, but I genuinely have no idea how they work together.

So PSU's guy isn't a true GM then, handling the player and coaching personnel decisions? I kinda assumed that was their primary role.

Call the position whatever you will. General Managers have been used for professional sports. Fitting. College Sports have devolved into a form of professional sports with NIL and the Portal. 😔
College sports, especially football, is going to hell on a rocket sled.

That is my understanding, yes. I doubt any college head football coach is going to give up player personnel control, and the college GMs that I have seen work alongside the coach in more of a director of operations type of role. If you read between the lines on what they say that Floyd's job responsibilities are, they don't actually include anything related to what happens on the field.

"Floyd will spearhead efforts in NIL development, branding, strategic planning for the football program and creating a long-term vision.

Floyd will work alongside new Head Coach Chris Fisk. His role will be a catalyst in a new era of Vikings Football. In addition to building pride on the field, Floyd will lead the development of an integrated NIL and brand ecosystem, cultivating strategic relationships with alumni, business leaders, supporters, and recruits to unlock long-term value, storytelling opportunities, and sustainable growth for the program."

Sounds like they’ve spent 20 years focusing on things “bigger than the scoreboard”.

Maybe they ought to try actually focusing ON the scoreboard for a change>
4 wins in the last 2 years, 1-11 this year. Can’t really get much worse lol

Ok, from what I've heard FBS GM's are very involved in player/coaching personnel(Andrew Luck is the most notable i know) but that coaches have the final say in recruiting. This is what google told me😁

"GM's are increasingly handling player personnel,
overseeing recruiting, the transfer portal, NIL, and roster management, freeing up head coaches, though the head coach usually makes the final decision"

That is interesting. I think a guy like Andrew Luck would have the chops to take on a role like that. It will be curious to see where this goes as the role evolves in the coming years.

Bill Parcells had a great quote about it back in the day, at least I think it was Parcells that I read say it. He used the analogy of a household staff. The head coach is the chef, and he is the one with the skills to put all the ingredients together to make a nice meal. But there is also a butler, who is the GM.

What kind of butler do you want/need? One that creates the menu and does the shopping, and it is up to the chef to execute on that plan? Or does the Chef make the detailed menu and shopping list, and then the butler goes to the store to get the best ingredients possible within the budget?

There are a lot of different ways to structure that relationship, and I walked away being really interested in thinking of the different ways that working relationship could function. Parcell's point was that if you are going to cook the food, you should at least get to do shop for some of the ingredients, but we have seen that go badly, too. (See Chip Kelly in Philly)

My thought is it will be an expanding role for a couple years, eventually working towards the professional model. Mostly though its gonna be a school by school basis. Eventually though, youre gonna have coaches who will turn down certain jobs based off the GM control probably.

Maybe I don't really understand the role of a general manager but the job description for PSU sounds more like an associate athletic director focused on football.
