If you can’t tell the difference between a harmless post online about a “trail of tears”, and chanting about fellow Montanans, including Montana players, eating shit, in mass unison everywhere you go then I think you may have mental problems.
I don't participate in the ESG part, only the Go Cats Go. I'd prefer that the ESG part was dropped or replaced. From the conversations I've had with fellow Bobcats, I'm in the minority.
However, the ESG part wasn't supposed to be interpreted literally. I can see why that would leave a bad taste in your mouth. (Pun intended) The ESG part was based on the fact that bears eat feces, which, on the surface, seems like a dumb thing to do. So, it's poking fun that your mascot and by extension its followers are dumb.
It started as a barroom call and response. The chant became a battle cry to juice the crowd and rally the troops. After it made its way into Mony Mony (to replace other inappropriate words), it grew more legs. Now, some chant it during the fight song. It's chanted more out of habit than with intent to specifically disparage Montanans, Griz players, etc., especially when it's done at (so I'm told) weddings, funerals, bar mitzvas, etc. At this point, I don't see how you put the toothpaste back in the tube.
I found it interesting that both the NCAA and BSC seemed to promote it.
