Congrats Cats

This is my non-researched take on the rivalry:

I don't understand the "support Montana" thing. When I lived in Texas, I never heard a Longhorns fan say "well, Texas isn't in the playoffs, but I am going to root for A&M". That would never happen.

Yet, because it's a "Montana team" people get bent out of shape because there are those of us who don't care about "repping the state" or "support all the Montana boys".

I absolutely do. not. care. about "Repping Montana" or "supporting all of the Montana boys". They chose MSU. I will never support that school or their players. They are my teams century long rivals.

I thought maybe that's an immature view. Maybe I don't have the emotional intelligence I should.

With that in mind I thought, "You should do a little research into what the psychological impacts are for a fan of a sports team to answer your own questions.

So, I did a little research:
  • Rivalries often trigger a primal "us vs. them" dynamic, known in psychology as Social Identity Theory.
  • Being part of a group provides self-esteem and a sense of community.
  • The rival becomes the "out-group," a target for exclusion and sometimes aggression, which reinforces the perceived superiority of one's own group (yep).
  • When a group's identity is challenged by a rival, members often feel a personal threat to their own status or values (I have mentored, tutored and been personally involved wioth several players and their families over twenty five years).
  • Victories against a rival trigger massive spikes in dopamine and activate the brain's reward circuits more than wins against other opponents.
  • Defeats by a rival can suppress the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC), the region responsible for regulating emotion and behavior. This imbalance can lead to impulsive, "flipping" emotional reactions during high-stakes moments (I absolutely experience this).
  • Shared history, geographical proximity, and repeated matchups intensify tensions.
  • Decades of legendary plays and controversial calls create a collective memory that fans pass down through generations, making every new contest feel like a chapter in an epic story. (Think of all the press and discussion about the "Biggest game in the history of the rivalry".)
  • The psychological stakes of a rivalry can increase physiological arousal and push individuals to take more risks than they would in other competitions (Lol Robbie Hauck and a few UC's and PF's).
  • When thousands of people cheer or boo together, the collective energy multiplies, making emotions feel more raw and real than they would in isolation (decades of going to Griz games at home and out of state have done this to me).
  • Fans are more likely to interpret ambiguous events (like a referee's call) in a way that confirms their bias against the rival, leading to further frustration and passion.
So there you go. This is what I found regarding rivalries. I am a Griz fan and I detest the Puds and that will never change. I will never support the Puds or their players, and it's not immature or a lck of emotional intelligence, it's psychology.

Right back atcha. I wholeheartedly agree but for the Cats. Respect.

I could never root for the cats to win under any circumstances and a lot of that thinking is because of their obnoxious fan base and their ESG crap. They were even doing it in Nashville. the Griz definitely live in their heads. Cats may have the upper hand for a period of time but we will be back. Finally Hauck will be gone when he chooses to go and any discussion about firing him is just wasted air time.
I haven't been to a Cat Griz game in Missoula in a very long time. Do Griz fans cheer FTC using the words, not the letters?

Hearing FTC from the student section is common at cat-Griz games. Though you never hear it from the crowd in general. Nor have I heard it at any other game in Missoula besides cat games.

That is the difference with msu's eat shit cheer. You hear it at every Bozeman game regardless of the opponent, not to mention in settings outside of football games themselves. One of my sons is an MSU grad and I speak from firsthand experience attending games in Bozo over the years, and at cat fan social gatherings.

That said, congrats to the cats. Early on they looked pretty sketchy, yet your kids developed into a hell of a team this year. Very unhappy your guys beat our guys this year. Yet very pleased to see a Big Sky team win and your Montana kids shine. It is quite an accomplishment. Good job.

Lets be honest, there's enough griz trolls put there that someone would've done the same. It just is what it is. Difference is, it would be locked right away at BN....
I’m not responsible for the behavior of others. I actually enjoy BN. There are a lot of knowledgeable football fans there that I enjoy talking with.

My sacrifices made to the football gods were apparently not received. Next time it won't be Chicken Wings. I throw in sliders, a prime ribs, Brisket, and a sixer of Highlander Scotch Ale.
If you sacrifice that Highlander scotch ale, my God what could the payoff be. That’s better than a Bozeman virgin, though I don’t think they exist.

many years ago the students would say fuck the cats. Now it’s just FTC once or twice during the rivalry game. Not incessantly all the time. Maybe you can get your mob of pussies to chant ESG GCG

I've only ever heard the letters and it's usually only during the rivalry game. Although sometimes the students do yell it at other times. But I think we can agree that students do dumb things on both sides of the rivalry. Grown adults telling other fans to eat excrement is simply beyond the pale in my opinion. And always will be. I would say the same thing if the situation were reversed.

It was a great game. Congrats to Cats. Let’s get after them next year ! Go Griz!
Griz and Cat's at the top, always GoGriz! Cat's were great to watch, dimensions of talent and well coached. But I still can't believe a Taco beat us, I'd imagine the Red Birds are scratching their feathers....about that same Taco guy!!!

Well coached - how many false starts?

I'm sure that might be player based too...I'm always unimpressed in big games with a whole bunch of dumb stuff, tackle out of bounds, spearing,, holding, bad snaps, PI's...coaching?

Vegan has better players on defense, offense is pretty close. Vegan is a much better recruiter than bobby but he isnt a better coach. Give both coaches equal talent and bobby wins 7 out of 10. Vegan struck gold with the QB, Like bobby did with 2023 QB.
What Bobby has done with Ah Yat is far superior to anything Vegan has done.

Cats were handed the championship.

1 more and they lose. Absolute drive killers & handed momentum to ISU. That was a shit show. Kem, would you agree that if they had only 2 false starts they win by 2 scores?
