Amick hitting the portal

People say we need to focus on recruiting high school but that’s 2 that we’ve developed straight out of high school that have bailed now. Hard to not use the portal in that scenario
The answer is in the middle, focus on recruiting and keeping top recruits from or outside the State, use the portal to plug gaps.

I definitely like using the portal to recruit top talent from around the Big Sky like we did with Wortham. Playing gives us a year of film to scout them and we have the resources to bring them in.

Two that were out of state, great gets for the program but in and out of the door. Look across the divide they were able to develop their instate recruits into studs and sprinkle transfer portal players in. Seems like we do the opposite.

Good, bad, or otherwise…… it’s getting harder to be a fan of small time college football. At least my FBS team is able to retain its talented players. My Alma mater is now a pseudo farm team. It’s thought to get excited about an all new roster annually
Unpopular opinion, maybe try and see if AhYat and Gillman would be willing to lose some NIL money to keep him? Both I'd imagine would want a good OL to stay, granted they might have already done that so who knows.

I mean that if he is leaving for a bag, it is probably not something Montana could match.
I definitely don't think we could match it, but maybe a bit of cash plus the gesture of 2 teammates could help. Everyone's different but if I was betting on it yeah you're correct.

I think something a lot of fans don't get is that the players want their teammates to get the best opportunity they can. If you asked Ah Yat and Gillman, I'm sure they would both say that they'd prefer Amick gets the biggest bag possible for himself if he can't get it here. This is why you see a ton of support voiced by current players and guys who are staying towards guys that are leaving.

Andy shmit must be proud. Publicly thrashing our players im sure helped a ton in retaining Colin here.

Based on his assessment, this is no big deal, we were horrible on the o line, so anyone who had meaningful snaps this season should be gone. AmIRiGht here? 😵‍💫

I think olinemen are the ones commanding the most NIL cash. He's a hot commodity. No FCS teams including NDSU or MSU are going to hold onto their best young promising linemen either. But I still think that developing young big bodies is a better approach than chasing veteran linemen in the portal. You're going to lose a lot of them, but development is still going to be the better approach, IMHO.

I completely understand that and not at all knocking the kid if he's going to get paid or even if teammates are encouraging it. At the same time if other players who know they're staying and losing a teammate who'd be a huge part of potential success next season, making an effort to have them stick around couldn't hurt. Worst case "sucks we're losing you man but go get paid!"

I hear you, HGG. It’s tough for the vast majority of fanbases except for the lucky few. I was at a party last night talking to a Boise State friend. He said he stopped reading the paper last week as the portal announcements began to roll in. We bemoaned the changes to cfb then drank beer in silence and sulked.
