Defensive Scheme

To be fair EWUs Freshman QB finally had a mistake and stopped their game winning Drive himself. And I'd hope we wouldn't need a game winning drive vs the likes of Indiana State, Portland State etc.
I was just being a smart-ass. The defense was good enough for 13 wins. That’s all.

How does the personnel at Alabama and Georgia compare to Montana in your opinion and is it close enough to use as an example of how situational 3 down looks win championships at Alabama and Georgia so it will work at Montana? Particularly do you think the personnel at Alabama/Georgia and Montana is comparable in their ability to hold up the run game?
Man you keep hitting me with in depth questions that I would need to research extensively to have good answers!

Honestly, I don’t know. But I do think a general recipe for success in any defense and more particularly 3 down would include a wrecking ball nose (family friend worked at UCLA in 2024. They had poor personnel, but had Jay Toia who was a man amongst boys for example) eg. Gubner.

At least 1 man of a pass rusher.
LBs/Safeties that are smart and can tackle.
And creatures at corner that can play man.

If you have those, you will always have a chance.

It seems we're going to be reliant on the Portal for the foreseeable future if our current recruiting situation is anything to go by, especially in State recruiting.

Correct me if I'm wrong but how is running an exotic and complicated Defense, that is difficult to learn, that will constantly have to be reloading with Transfer Portal players, while seemingly incapable of getting the size on the Line we need to be successful a winning strategy?
I think you kind of hit the nail on the head here. Hauck 2.0 earlier offenses were effective because he had a true 2 gap filler and some great read and react LBs and DBs that can play man. Griz fans and coaches were spoiled. Now that coach Hauck is behind the eight ball as far as developing 2 gap interior lineman he needs to change the scheme. He has recruited some fabulous talent in the portal.
Currently everything is twists, slants, disguised stunts and read and react. It's a complicated defense and disciplined offenses like the bobcats seem to expose the weaknesses.
If you bring in 11 new portal orphans every year on defense you need to simplify things to play faster and take advantage of the superior hybrid style athletes. I think Instead of the 2 gap style linemen and scraping, read and react, non gap assigned LBs, he should attack gaps with quick penetration. No more bear front style mano a mano linemen. It's react, then read not read and react. It's gap control and quick gap penetration is key. The Miami hurricanes ate downhill running teams alive with that style defense full of hybrid athletes. If the griz are going to insist on reloading the best available athletes from the portal every year it's their best bet against the cats and even the MVFC IMHO.

To be fair about UCLA in 2024 the poor personnel seemed to be on the offense and not the defense. I thought they did fine against some really good teams earlier in the season for example against Oregon, LSU and Penn State, it might look like the other team scored a lot but it was some of their lower scoring games all year. Later in the year from what I remember they held opponents to 20 points or less most games. The issue was the offense and particularly their red zone offense was not great. I could be wrong. It sounds like you would have a way informed opinion on that.

Georgia. "Of any variety"?

Look at the the first part of the video. 15 seconds.

"Run UGA & Kirby Smart's 3-3-5 TITE Defense in College Football 25!!!"
Jack, that's a video about running a certain defensive scheme in a video game. Georgia will sub into a 3-3-5 at times, but their base defense is a 3-4. They also don't play the 3-3-5 like UM does. Not really comparable.

Actually, as I already pointed out twice, their base defense is the 4-2-5

They often play a 3-3-5. I follow Georgia. I go to games. I'm going to the Fiesta Bowl in a week. Hope to see Georgia there.

"Georgia football runs a sophisticated, hybrid 3-4 system (often referred to as a "Multiple" defense) designed by head coach Kirby Smart and defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann."

"The defense is notoriously difficult to prepare for because it is multiple. On any given play, they can look like a 3-4, a 4-3, or even a 3-3-5. This allows Kirby Smart to dictate the game's tempo rather than reacting to what the offense does."

"Frequent use of nickel personnel (e.g., 4-2-5 or variations like 3-3-5) to counter spread offenses, rather than a traditional base 3-4."

"While the 4-2-5 is a key look, Georgia’s scheme morphs into different fronts depending on down, distance, and personnel. They’ll present variations that look like a 3-4, 3-3-5, or nickel/dime fronts to take advantage of matchups."

"Why they use the 3-3-5
  • Creates confusion for quarterbacks
  • Allows for disguised blitzes
  • Puts more athletic defenders in coverage
  • Helps defend RPOs and spread concepts

Bottom line

  • ✅ Yes, Georgia runs a 3-3-5
  • 🧠 They’re best described as a multiple 4-2-5 defense that mixes in 3-3-5 looks"

Iowa State and TCU use a 3-3-5 too.

Yes, Georgia also uses a 4 front at times.

It is undeniable that Georgia frequently uses the 3-3-5.

This attitude is part of the problem. It should never be acceptable to lose to the cats so consistently that the program falls to mediocrity. Because that’s where it is headed. How many leave when they see that they either can’t develop here or they won’t be developed. Prepare for consistent 7 win seasons.
Program is nothing close to mediocre. 13-2. Semis

They sub into the 3-3-5 but the correct classification would be 4-2-5 hybrid for their base defense. Rob is more correct than you.

Hoops is out to lunch as usually but he likes AI. What a clown. High school sh!t really, and he’s 72 years old. Sad really. He should use is “$750k per year” to get counseling help.

His AI copy and paste literally says they are best described as a multiple 4-2-5… 4-2-5 hybrid is a better way to describe the same thing.

Zero chance beating them next year in Bozeman. Bobby can’t even get it done at home despite 39-9 seniors. Out coached out developed out weightroomed A new streak has begun and it’s not a good one.
Count it as a victory. None of what you said is true. You are just an Neggie and bad fan.

Only 1 mistake twice since the fall. Every substantive post is right. You are jealous. 13-2. You have Cat Derangement Syndrome.

Hoops, Georgias base defense is a 3-4 that is installed on day one. They run a multiple defensive scheme which is suitable against the different offenses they face and the situation that determines it. The 3-3-5 is just a package. That’s it.

Georgia’s base defense is a 4-2-5 hybrid with situational 3 down looks. This has already been covered. I think Rob said it 2 or 3 times, I have twice and Hoops has mentioned it as well.
