Shafer hit vs Harper hit

Shafer gets hit way low, out for the game torn all, mcl, meniscus. Harper tackles his guy, very unlucky that the helmets were at the same level, gets ejected for targeting. Both defensive players making similar actions to the tackle, two totally different outcomes. Shitty deal.
100% Dang oh! Feel bad for Shafe with that injury. Honestly, Micah too - bang bang play in a huge semi final. Come on!!! ‘Twas Interesting to see what was deemed worthy of referee intervention and ‘twas not. Still need to be a bit better. It’s very depressing, big motivation this off season. Go Griz!!!

The hit on Shafer was bs. He was still in the process of catching the pass and hadn’t turned his head forward yet. Definitely could be consider a dirty hit on a defenseless player. Hitting someone in the knees is dirty and doing it when he is looking backwards is a punk move. Going that low is also poor tackling technique. If Shafer wasn’t still catching the ball and was facing forward, he could have hurdled the dirty Cat player and kicked him in the face on the way to scoring a touchdown.

I’m glad somebody else said this. I also thought the Shafer hit and the B. Davis tackle were dirty, and there was a similar tackle on Gilman a couple plays after the Davis injury (which, thankfully, didn’t injure Gilman).

Is there anything that can be done about these plays after the fact?

Its considered dirty to tackle by the rules?

I hate that he got hurt, nobody wants to see that. But a DB tackling low on a much bigger tight end right after the catch is exactly how they’re coached. Injury doesn’t automatically make it a dirty play.

Not fair to say that Harper’s tackle was “unlucky” but another players was “ill intent”. Football is a fast game and I very much doubt either player wanted to intentionally mame another.

Unfortunately not, I don't think. Aside from address it with the officials pool. Bobby can send in a specific number of plays in question to the league and national officials pool to be addressed. I think the Shafer one is particularly egregious. That could be a career ender for him. I had heard he had legitimate pro potential, probably not now having to have his knee basically fully repaired. 👎

Two very unfortunate circumstances. I don’t like the hit on Shafer. However, since the whole concussion saga that took place around 15 years ago completely changed the way we teach tackling. I know a lot of people (including myself) from this region that went out to Seattle for a tackling training with the Seahawks and how to best combat the hits to the head. Rugby tackling was introduced to basically every kid from Montana to the Pacific Northwest. These kids have now grown up learning how to put shoulder pads through the thighs is the emphasis and to wrap and roll. Every kid is taught to aim for the thigh board.

Nobody is taught to drive their shoulder into the side of a receiver’s knee! I think the word you want is maim , rather than mame. Maiming can be unintentional or, intentional! So , are you saying the player making that “tackle” didn’t deliberately target his knee?
