Our DBs are too damn slow!

Something i’ve noticed at least the last 4 years is that we lack speed in our 2nd and third levels. This combined with an undersized defensive line has been a plague. You saw it on that 80 yard tud to dowler and you saw it again with that big run from jones. Our guys look a step behind. I mean of course this is something that is just kindve an issue at the fcs level. But i would love to see us get some real speed, especially as the others schools are starting to get good speed at receiver.

I agree that we've looked a step below at the 2nd and 3rd levels at times, but a lot of that shows up when the defensive line gets dented and our backers are fitting through trash instead of triggering downhill. When you're undersized, everything looks slower because guys are recovering instead of attacking. Explosives like the Dowler td and Jones run usually happen because of 1 of 3 reasons. The edge isn't set/spill isn't clean, the safety has to trigger from depth or the pursuit angles get stressed. Adding speed helps, but improving size and strength on the defensive line and reducing conflict on overhangs is a better approach than just recruiting track stars on defense.

I'd love to have some track stars on our line too. some big ole throwers on the line, some jumpers in the linebacker corp and some short sprinters in the db group

Safeties dont need to be burners. They just need to be in good position and take good angles.
being fast usually helps with those things, I think the issue in our safety room when we let Robby run rampant, We run a 3-3-5 and 4 out of our 5 dbs have fcs linebacker speed.

Track athletes that choose track over football often do because they don't like the physical part of football. You want good lineman find the 6'5 basketball player with good feet or the heavyweight wrestler and the good ones probably are throwers in HS too. Jumpers as LB's? What? Most fast athletes have had a chance to play football at some point in their lives in the U.S. and if they don't choose football it is usually because they don't like hitting people or getting hit. There is "track fast" and football fast and most of these Griz defensive backs were track stars in high school too. Tanner Huff won the 100 and 200 in AA. Brady Beaner ran a 10.66 100m and Brock Beaner ran a 10.74 100m last year which would have been state champ in Class A, B and C in Montana and 2nd in AA. And they are tougher than nails which is why next year when you all realize what we have with these two.

You mean this may be why SDSU had a 95-yard passing TD, and the Cats one for 87 yards? Is the 95- yard passing TD the long by a team against the Griz?

Hoops will tell you speed wasn't a factor in these plays. Then when you repeat the obvious he'll tell you you're stupid and you don't know ball but he does bc he talks to Bobby sometimes and often goes to QB club. A tale as old as time.

You would think that if our DBs had any speed, a receiver wouldn't be able to go 95 and 87 yards. Then again, they were in such a poor position because of their alignment in the defense.

The 95 yd td our two defenders ran into each other and took one another out of the play. Now unless you have someone like the Atlanta freeze who can make up 10 yards in that distance, chances are you won't catch the runner!

How many times in your lifetime have you seen a 95-yard or longer receiving TD?
