To Nick and Jack

Not with you here. Watch the replay. Harper could have done nothing about it. He was going to make the play, and dowler trying to leveraged to get across the 1st down marker. Im also not saying its the reason we lost, we got smoked in the 4th. But there were plays that lead us to it. Both can be true. Ask Bobby what he thought of the targeting.
Maybe don’t lead with your crown? That’s one thing he coulda done…

Ive watched it several times, its targeting in the sense of helmet to helmet. But Harper is at the same level the cats defender was at who hit Shafer. Shafer was extended high, taco was angling forward to get up field as quick as he could. What else was Harper supposed to do?
He hadn't even begun to move up field yet. Turned his head and BOOM!

However, none of that matters. It wasn't a bullshit call. You can say there was nothing else he could do, and even if that were true (which it isn't) it doesn't matter. It was not an intentional targeting, but it was targeting. It has to get called.

also curious, I know all the griz fans were whining about the tickets and how bobcat stadium won’t be sold out because of the season ticket holders hoarding all of them. What happened to that? lol.

Genuine question. If Harper wasn’t ejected earlier, does he make a better play on the ball on 3rd and 20? The guy the let catch it, was that Harper’s replacement?
Hard to say, but his backup was in the game and was the one covering the deep post and was absolutely backwards when the ball came out, towards the WR and in his haste to recover ran into the other cover guy who was trailing and in the position to make the tackle. Loud was out at that point so I believe thats why they were in a zone coverage without blitzing. Biggest mistake of the game on the coaches part given that we had been having success getting pressure on him to that point and forcing some tough throws.

I know Harper has good technique and can make a tackle in space. If he’s in I believe that lob becomes a 50/50 ball or at most a big gain.

Tripp nailed it last week about what the strategy should have been, yet on the biggest play of the game we refused to blitz him on the side he likes to roll to and into his throwing arm.

You don’t understand football and never played the game.
I think you need to bone up on the "defenseless player" part of the targeting rule.

Key Aspects of the Rule
  • Definition:
Targeting involves initiating forcible contact with the crown of the helmet or hitting the head/neck area of a defenseless opponent with the helmet, shoulder, forearm, hand, or elbow.

    • Defenseless Player:
Includes players in the act of or just after catching a pass, those who have given themselves up (like sliding), or players in the tackle box subject to a blindside block.
    • Indicators:
Replay must confirm indicators like launching, leading with the crown of the helmet, or lowering the head to make forcible contact.

This guy knows ball. Hoops can learn a thing or two

I’m not disputing the intent and how they play unfolded. I’m just saying as it pertains to the officials it’s black and white. Once the crown comes in contact with the opposing player it will be called a target. It’s tough and I don’t love the rule as most are not intentional.

Many who have looked at the film disagree with you on the targeting. The tackle on Davis was textbook major tackling penalty.

The Cats are going to get rolled by Ill St.
It was textbook targeting. I doubt it was intentional, but clearly to anyone with fully functioning eyeballs targeting. Shut up. Read. Learn.
Cats are preparing for ISU and a natty. GRiZ are preparing to play portal roulette again vs landing the recruits they want and developing them. You’ve now witnessed 3 Cat wins in 13 months. 8 out of the last 10. But you want to deflect to a targeting call. Or the refs. Or arguing with Schmidt. Your schtick’s long past the expiration date. If you want to have an intelligent discussion, say something intelligent.
