What We Can Do As Griz Fans

Alight folks. I’m done complaining. I’m now in the part of the process where action is needed. So what can we do as fans to further the university? What can we do to attract more students and the athletes we need across all sports (not just football)?

We need to organize. We need to create NIL chapters in every alumni hub, not just in Montana but nationwide. Montana has fantastic academic programs that do fantastic work and need a broader connection to the outside world. These alumni groups and networks can act not only as a revenue generating mechanism, but as support, mentorship, and networking opportunities for student athletes, students, and other alumni. Many of us can’t join programs like QB club ($1,000?? In THIS economy??), but we can donate time, mentorship, networks, and expertise. In this, everyone can participate. NIL doesn’t need to just be about money. It can be about opportunity as well after the final whistle and that walk across the stage.

There needs to be a broader push to market these things from the university, but also from the alumni groups as well. It can’t be simply a social thing where people meet once a year to watch a football game. This is our school, our community, and its high time we act like we have a stake in this.

The coaches aren’t in this alone (regardless of who they are). If we want improvement we can’t stand passively by and expect others to make the change. I’ve already reached out to Marcus Welnel to try and get something moving. This is not a name drop ( his email is public), but it’s me trying to take action. To do something. I’ve had some conversations out in the world with other folks that are like minded and motivated. It’s time to roll up our sleeves and get to work.

Unless you think NIL made the decision on 3rd and 20, you're wasting your time.

Love it

I think NIL needs to inject itself into the business community in Missoula, especially those that benefit from football success and build a program with commitments and recognitions so Griz fans can see and reward them for their commitment (stay / shop / eat / drink / etc).

Lets say you can have 50 businesses that span the food and hospitality spectrum commit to $1000/year each - that's another $50,000 for NIL.

I think the NIL needs to add an easy to join, lower cost fan portal - maybe it's $50/mo or $250 per year or something. Let fans join and support at a level that's not QB club type numbers and then maybe provide a weekly player update/interview by way of video to share out as a way to say thanks for the commitment.

Let's say we can add 5000 fans at a $250/annual commitment to support the NIL program - that's $1,250,000.

Now we're cooking

Yes! And remember, this collective doesn’t have be just about money in the traditional sense, but opportunity both during and after college. Even if money is tight, having this collective organize events, networking, and mentorship would be massively beneficial and accessible to a wide swath of alums.

This can be useful in other locations besides Missoula. Imagine being recruited in someplace like Portland and then after signing day getting a welcome event from alumni in the area? Or having alumni who are in the industry that you want to go into ready to help with their network or with advice? The neighbors always talk about family. This can be our opportunity to show it too.

If we don’t, who will?

We had the Big Sky O Player of the Year and first team QB, and still could only score 23 points. The players aren't the problem.

The biggest offensive play in the game Saturday was made by a player from the state of Montana. The leading rusher for the Cats in the game was from the state of Montana. The first sack of the game was made by a player from the state of Montana.

I dont' think the problem is money.

Let’s not derail this. The time to bitch about coaches or scheme is not now. There are bigger more fundamental problems that need to be addressed and in this instance we actually have the power to do something productive and positive.

None of us are current players or coaches. But we are professionals with networks and expertise. We can positively affect retention and recruitment.

I was mad and sad about the results and trajectory of the institution this weekend. I never knew or realized the extent of the disparity between the two schools. Now I know and I need to do something within my means to help.

It’s not. It’s more than that. Kids want to feel special and supported. Then let’s actually DO that. Not just with social media posts. I figured I’d yak at you guys to see if anyone would be on board with something like this. We have the engagement and passion. We just need an attainable outlet for it.

I like how you think but in my opinion, people that want networking at 18/19 join fraternities. Kids looking to play college ball don't think like that. They want their team to feel like a family. They will appreciate all the stuff you're talking about once they get to campus after a year or two. But recruiting high school players, I don't see it. And transfers are hired guns alot of times. Maybe it makes a difference. Idk.

Hotels in this town need to get in on it more than anyone else.

Part of that could be boosted by bringing in better noncon opponents with bigger fanbases but I doubt any business benefits more from Griz football games than hotels.

How about we collectively express our dissatisfaction by making some noise at Main Hall?

I believe we should be bombarding Bodner with letters and phone calls expressing on opinions on the lackluster state of Griz athletics.

IMO Haslam, Bobby, and Travis all need to go.

You don't think Bodner is part of the problem? From my perspective, it is the lackluster state of the University.
