We Are Trapped in "Good But Never Great Limbo" with Bobby

I feel ill writing this. But we are stuck in the most frustrating spot with Hauck 2.0

It's clear we're not good enough. We've lost the edge we once had in the state. We've lost the edge in the Big Sky.

Both of these things would be difficult, but not impossible to overcome with a coach who was able to look inward and realize this isn't it. Or with an athletic director willing to step up and say the obvious — this is not good enough.

We do not have either. We have a coach who is too stubborn (or arrogant) to change and an athletic director too weak to demand more.

The coach is good. He's a decent motivator and decent recruiter (or more accurately Justin Green is a good recruiter). Combine that with the institutional advantages Montana has (elite stadium, elite fanbase, some NIL money, tradition) and Montana will win 10-11 games every year. If Ah Yat continues to blossom, we might get back to the semifinal or final.

But we're not good enough to win a title. And we'll never be bad enough to ever move on.

I get it, the FCS has changed since Reed and Glenn were good enough. Pining for yesterday does no one any good. But that's what got us into Hauck 2.0, people who couldn't accept that that era was over. (I'm looking at you, Kevin Washington.) If you stop innovating and evolving, you're dead. And I fear that's what happened to UM.

Some of this feels spoiled. No, I wouldn't rather be Sac State, a school without a plan or a country. Or Weber State, which is in total reboot.

This isn't just about a few tweaks. A few kids in the transfer portal. It isn't JUST about fixing the relationship with Montana high school coaches.

It's about having enough humility to realize you've slipped, lost ground to your rival, squandered the historical advantage we once had. And now you have to work way harder to change the narrative.

Congrats to the Cats.

Wish us luck. Because this isn't hell, but it's a miserable place to live.

Bobby is a decent enough as a coach, but as long as his philosophy is pass first, The Griz will continue to recruit that type of an offensive lineman. Bobby is a crowd pleaser to the majority of Montana fans who are still in love the air Read offense. Bobby’s offense ain’t no air Read, sure run a lot more, but they still recruit the o- line to throw the ball, and good run blocking is secondary, and I don’t think you can win championships with that kind of philosophy. I truly expect someone to chime in and tell me I’m full of shit 💩 ..
I really don’t care what Bobby does as long as the Griz are able to get first downs on 2nd and 3rd and short. You need to be able to run the damn ball and control the clock in November and December if you even want the chance to sniff a title in January.
Griz need to have the horses up front then learn how to play bully ball… It’s also a tough order for a light but speedy d- line to go at it all 4 quarters when you’re lining up against 300 lb refrigerators…
Bobby will probably win 10 more next year, and that’s a pretty damn good thing FOR MOST TEAMS…but obviously not so in Missoula..
I really doubt Montana’s current style of play will bring the Griz a championship with this existing type of template…But in the big picture of all things Griz, I think we’re pretty fortunate to have Bobby 🦅 and his staff in town..

GO GRIZ!

great post !!! All spot on and people who say the future is looking bright come on its rinse and repeat right now for us. Yes we are spoiled and the fans are insane, the best in the country and our players are amazing but we are in Penn state/Notre dame purgatory and I'm not for it

I hope the bobcats win this whole damn thing and rub it in our damn face, as they should, so it can sink in a bit more for people what is going on and what will most likely happen again next year

Good post. Hauck certainly is arrogant as personified by his post game interview comment that the wrong team one. Arrogance and stubbornness do not make good bedfellows.

Umm, I don’t think he was making excuses in the presser. In fact I thought he owned up to it and beat around the bush that the decision not to bring pressure on 3rd and 20 was a bad decision.

Hey 72 CHUMP….Sometimes reality sucks.

What about the injuries, targeting call, back to the basement, dude. Boobie is the master of excuses but keep him around!

Well is he wrong about any of that? The targeting call played a big role in the game. It got one of our best players ejected. As for injuries, he didn’t bring that up. A reporter asked him about that. We did lose 5 starters in the game so we can’t act like that’s not nothing but it definitely doesn’t help your chances of beating a team like that on the road.

Every team has injuries and watch the interview. He said the targeting call on Harper was wrong, and the injuries to Shafer and Davis definitely affected them. Listen carefully...and Harper and the rest of the D celebrating the Dowler hit is Hauck personified. He teaches dirty tactics and I dont doubt he told the DBs to head hunt. We'll equate the hit on Shafer to last year in bozeman when he took out Davis...

some of the cats were clearly shooting for the knees yesterday. and what's with the d-lineman who felt the need to tackle ah yat when the td had already been called, and he was three yards into the end zone?

it's football. do you think the griz who were celebrating actually even saw the helmet-to-helmet? seems like they were probably busy doing other things at the time, and only saw the result, an incomplete pass.

Dowler sold the hit well. I agree by definition, it was targeting though. There was no malintent from Harper other than a slightly off target solid hit that any D player would like to deliver.

Tell me who didn’t wince watching Schafer being taken out with a low and direct hit to the knee… 10 out of 10 Tight ends would have been injured with that hit. May have been legal, but man that was a nasty hit. I’ve had 3 major reconstructive surgeries to one knee injured by the same type of tackle…hence suffering a huge lazy boy recliner wince watching that yesterday and hell, even had a cracked open beer that was spilled..Won’t be watching that replay any time soon. Heal up GRIZ!

G0 GRIZ!

So well you’d have thought they’d check him for a concussion….he didn’t even miss a play.
