Mountain West looking to add three teams

What is the upside to moving up? The last thing a fan base wants is to end up stuck in a situation where a championship isn't a reality. I'm not sure Griz football would have the same passion around it if they are gearing up for a Idaho Potato Bowl with a 6-6 record. Now if there is a split by the P4 and a realignment occurs then I think it makes sense to be open to change. James Madison and Boise State are best case scenarios of a move up to FBS and they aren't really championship contenders in reality. The odds say we are much more likely to end up as a middling football program. I also think that part of what makes UM-MSU football so fun is all the in-state recruits. I don't know that you have 30 some odd MT kids on your roster if you move up. A lot could be lost.

More $$ for the school, better exposure, playing with schools that are more our peers and care more about Athletics (MWC team level) and if the G6 has their own playoff system then a NC is still possible.

I suggest you actually read through threads.

Seems risky to give up championship opportunities.

Loser talk.

Yep. 27k people would rather watch the Griz play against Northern Colorado, Central Washington, Portland State, Utah Tech, St Thomas-Minnesota, Indiana State.

If Montana moved up and was playing games against Wyoming, Oregon State, Utah State, Washington State, App State, Colorado State, James Madison, Delaware, etc... Nobody would ever want to watch those teams come play in Washington-Grizzly Stadium. Absolutely no way... We'd 100% see attendance fall because the fans would rather see us compete against teams with 5k fans in stadiums that have a track surrounding the field, or use gimmicky red turf to try to be more relevant, or try to entice people to attend their games by providing pregame/postgame concerts of artists nobody has heard of.

Get ready for a consistent game attendance of 10k fans in Washington-Grizzly Stadium if we move up and play against programs who have fanbases that actually give a damn.

🙄

Big Sky (FCS) is in a better position with whatever the Mountain West is nowadays. The only conference worth moving to would be the PAC12. If the MWC is a stepping stone, then absolutely.

I have my own reasons for wanting UM to move up. Living in Denver going to Air Force or Wyoming to watch the Griz sounds a lot better than going to the glorified high school stadium at UNC.

Or PSU to an unglorified high school stadium in an adjacent city.

Montana is never moving up! The numbers didn't make sense the last time the school explored the financials and the make less sense now that the application fee in $ 5 million. Montana needs to have 16 scholarship sports, at least 6 mens and at least 8 women's. They current have 13. Additionally, the have to put $ 6 million toward at least 210 scholar athletes. So $5 million, 3 more sports, and a lot more scholarship money.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to see the Griz in the MW. They'd be competitive and it would be a blast to travel to a few of the away games. God knows Greeley, Ogden, and Pocatello are not destination picks.

Yes, they needed to seat at least 25,000 fans per game on average, and have 1 rest room per 100 fans. Idaho had to leave FBS because they only had 1 rest room for the entire stadium. Really made for long lines.
There is no longer a stadium requirement in the FBS, it was eliminated after 2023. It use to be 30K up until 2004 but then moved to 15K paid attendance but now it no longer a quantified requirement.

What’s wrong with Ogden? It seems like one of the better destinations in the conference and has great views from the stadium.
