This is the Griz team we've been waiting for

NDSU was sold out. The south endzone was practically empty. Yeah man the 09 game was a trip. I was seriously considering popping out and heading back down to Hamilton, then Boom! Marc Mariani becomes a Grizzly God. I am SO happy to have been at that game. There are five games that stick in my brain that I was able to have been there for. I wish I had been there to watch NDSU get defeated in '23.

Yes that So Dakota State game is certainly in my top five. The reason I remember the south endzone being so empty for that one is because my sons and I were among the 100 or so sitting there. God bless Mariani. It was another bad day for the Bunnies in Missoula.

After going 11-1 in the regular season, the players and coaches got some much needed rest and family time. Then coming back after a loss, they played their best game and most complete game against a very good opponent. The coaches are doing an amazing job with this team and have them peaking at the right moment. We did have the early mistakes coming off a bye, but for the most part we dominated the rabbits. All 3 phases played well. These kids are locked in and focused and they are just playing good team ball. Go GRIZ!
You should post more.

I love when people get all bent out of shape about playoffs not being sold out. Usually it’s the same people that think fees for NIL or capital projects should continue to be tacked onto season ticket holders to support the program, then sit and watch the game from the comfort of their warm living rooms while paying $15 a month for ESPN+ without investing anything else into the program.

The people that come to playoff games are passionate and the team knows that. It’s a much more knowledgeable and passionate football crowd than any homecoming game. Many of those around us in the stands travel a several hours from various parts of the state, spend a lot of money on gas, lodging, tickets, food, gear. That’s a huge commitment for many. Just season tickets alone for many is a big chunk of income to invest for 8 home games and tack on all the other stuff and it could be a family trip to Hawaii instead, so we are fortunate so many choose to spend their Saturdays in WaGriz. I’ll never knock those who make it to 7-8 games then don’t want to fight the weather or spend any extra money than what they budgeted. Just as it’s not fair to criticize fans or alums that have no other choice because they have jobs and families out of town or out of state.

The other thing most people don’t understand is the level of corporate tickets that are purchased as season tickets/mini plans to give to employees. Considering the financial boon from home games noted over the last couple years, that support needs to continue into the playoffs from local business that gain the most profit, or the university needs to find other businesses to tap into. If the team is successful it’s a great way to bring in new corporate sponsors that may invest in the future. Give them a discount on tickets if they purchase X amount of promotional tickets to give away.

Note that the NCAA has a rule on the minimum that must be charged for playoff tickets. It's just at or above the lowest price tickets during the season, or something like that. I was just addressing your promotional idea. The NCAA wants their cut. They don't want money being drained from them to go to promotions. Small point.

Fair point. However, we did have a business come in during the Furman game (if I remember right) to cover cost of student ticket costs.

Hey Wolf...yeah, I invest $99 into ESPN+ to watch the games from the comfort of my warm living room....1800 fucking miles away. If y'all had ANY idea the number of Griz fans there are throughout the country (many on this very board) you wouldn't make such broad, sweeping disparaging statements.

And FYI: We're jealous as FUCK that you get to spend Saturdays in Wa/Griz.

Clearly didn’t read this part up above(see the last part of the 2nd paragraph).

Just as it’s not fair to criticize fans or alums that have no other choice because they have jobs and families out of town or out of state.”

Also read that caveat in the first paragraph.

“paying $15 a month for ESPN+ without investing anything else into the program.”

Exactly, AND, I know that people hate comments about the weather but for the older folk it's a very real thing. My parents have their two season tickets and then my sister has two so there's normally four of them during the regular season because they usually get someone else to go to the game with them. But when the playoffs roll around they go from 4 tickets to 2 because it's too cold for my mom and they have no need to pick up another extra seat just to give it away to somebody. I think there's a lot of people who don't pick up all of their season tickets for the playoffs for similar reasons.

So there's a lot of valid reasons for why the playoff crowds are smaller.
Fair enough

Can't speak for anyone else, but I invested in the program and the school over 25 years. I'm not going to write a financial report, but it's suffice to say I have done my part, so have dozens of others on this board. You never know who is on the other side of that screen. There are former players, boosters, alumni, etc.

Sounds like you invested in the program. 👍

Why you felt the need to defend yourself is beyond me because clearly you were one that has. I was merely pointing out the factors that lead to decreased attendance that people here were criticizing. Also, there are some out there (clearly not you or the group of people you mentioned given their investment and sacrifice) that would criticize, not invest, then suggest that a group that pumps a large amount of revenue into the athletics department should do more every time there is a financial need within the AD, and fill out every home game during the playoffs.

Now, I go to every home playoff game, will try to go to Bozeman if we end up there, will travel to Nashville, will buy gear, will pay parking, will buy concessions, and invest. I live here, which already makes that more feasible for me than many which I understand.

I wasn’t the one flippantly calling the attendance shitty as many were here, even though it’s well in line historically with second round games.

I gave our tickets to my assistant for her to take her boys, as 2 of my boys had basketball tourneys and we couldn't go, obviously usually always there. But the crowd seemed amazing, and even a higher announced crowd than I expected. As you pointed out, it was at minimum on par, if not more than usual for 1st/2nd round playoff game.

I expect 24,000 ish this Saturday, and if we get there, that will feel like 27k. Playoff crowds rock!

I still remember their look on their faces standing by the bus, one of WTF happened.

How many unanswered points did we have ?
