Vigen just landed in Portland… best thing for the Griz?

Points to remember about Coach Vigen:

1.He's had one head coaching job, and he took over a winning program--not top of the heap, but arguably headed in the right direction, more W's than L's during Choad The Toad's last year. He deserves credit for further strengthening MSU--their '21 team was primarily Choate's team but the '24 team was Coach Vigen's. And his decision to replace McKay with TM heading into the '21 playoffs was pretty fricking brilliant. !!!

2. The Oregon State football program is a " deep in the toliet, turn- around- program, currently @ 2-9.

3. Oregon State, at 2-9, is in first place in The PAC-12--I am not making that up.--because one of their two wins was a squeaker over WAZZU whom the Beavs play for a second time on Nov. 29, which points out another problem: The Pac-12 is currently a joke and when all of the Mountain West schools join next year, Boise State and San Diego State will likely dominate.

4. The PAC-12 is no longer a Power 5 Conference--there will still be only 4 after the MW teams join next year.--and that's likely to remain status quo for many years. I don’t think The PAC will become a power conference for the foreseeable future.

So if Coach Vigen can turn The Beavers around, great kudos to him because Corvallis in 2025 is not Bozeman in 2021, where MSU needed a tune-up not a new engine like OSU needs in a defacto new FBS conference.

You make great points and I don’t disagree with anything you posted. Still, Vigen is taking the job if it is offered. Why? There are only so many openings every year, especially ones that he has a realistic shot at. OSU is one of those and despite being in the gutter, they would pay well. He is like every coach on earth. He believes he can turn the program around and he has an ego. Shocker! Vigen is Jimmy Rogers without the ring. He will take the job, the money and probably his QB. MSU fans will be bummed and I don’t blame them. I know several who are hoping the job falls through. They have been vocal and also think MSU needs to prepare if he stays another year. They need to identify the next potential candidate.

I, too, would probably take the Oregon State Job if I were Coach Vigen thinking, like he probably is, " If I do well in Corvallis, clean up the mess, turn OSU around and win some games, my next stop will be in The Big 10 or Big 12." I would also take the job, moreover, realizing Corvallis 2025-26 is going to be much more difficult thsn Bozeman 2021, and he already knows this.

Corvallis for Coach Vigen will be a high-risk, high-reward opportunity.

Different sport, but when Tinks took the men's bball coach job @ Corvallis 10 years ago, he was walking into a job in a Power 5 Pac-12. My-oh-my how the world of college athletics has changed in 10 years !!!

The man is in his 50’s. He is a head coach who is currently on a roll. I doubt he’s satisfied sitting in Bozeman to complete his career. Not that he’s unhappy. I’m sure he has higher aspirations

It will take time to turn around Oregon State. Yet if he strikes the reported “long term” contract he needs to go. If he knows he has five years to do it, or pick up an enormous buyout if they can him early, he’s a fool not to get financial security for himself and his family. He should earn as much in one year there as he would get in its entirety by remaining in Bozo over the next five years.

I just find it ironic the Griz could be playing him (and presumably Lamson) next autumn.

It’s a head coaching job at the next level, will pay much better and housing costs will be significantly reduced to the tune of almost $200K based on median home cost. To keep moving you believe in yourself and take the best opportunity available. The other option is to take the Choate and Entz route and get a position coaching job with a made up co-coordinator title at a power 5 level so you can get a job that is no better than OSU in a couple years anyway, (Nevada and Fresno). He most likely will take as many good players with him as he can, ie
Jimmy Rogers and maybe will try to poach some of ours and other
Big Sky players in the process. I’m not aware of any coach in waiting on their current staff??? Costello might look at former SDSU/ current WSU assistant coaches since of his previous history.

Meanwhile, KSU coach Keilman (former NDSU HC) was crying at the podium Saturday...that pendulum swings both ways.

He was crying because he has to go back to Manhattan, I'd be crying too if I had to go to that shithole again
