Good, Bad, Ugly - MSU

Good:
- put up 28 points against a very good defense, thought that would be enough for the win
- Gillman was a beast as usual. 15 carries for 138 and 1 TD. 8.8 ypc and juked some cats players out of their jock straps
- Brooks Davis doesn’t look like a Freshman. That one handed TD grab while keeping his foot down was insane. 10 catches for 113 and 1 TD (and another TD wiped away on a horrible call imo)
- Ah Yat was cool, calm and collected. He was very efficient. 26-32 for 186 with a TD and ran one in as well. Took some shots delivering the ball but kept grinding
- Wortham had some big returns and nice runs. Had 175 all purpose yards and a TD.
- that 9 minutes 16 play drive in the 3rd Q that led to a TD was a thing of beauty
- Griz D had 4 sacks and got some pressure
- held Taco in check in passing game and return game

Bad:
- the pick 6 changed the game. Watching live it looked like PI but it is what it is
- the Brooks Davis TD being negated over a phantom hold was also game changing. I watched that play on replay several times and if that is a hold by Schaefer then every single play of the game is a hold.
- the defense not being able to get a stop in the cats final drive where they milked 6 minutes away
- some missed tackles leading to extra yards for cats
- letting the QB run wild on us once out of the pocket. He has done that to teams all year. It’s not like it should have been a surprise. Seems like we lacked some execution or game plan in stopping it.

Ugly:
- the blocked FG that could have tied the game. One because it was a low kick, two because Crews batted it down. The irony in that.

I actually hope we get another shot at them in Bozeman. Would be tough to beat them there but I’d take those odds over going to NDSU.

Feel free to add

Maybe mediocre instead of bad, but pass protection wasn’t there. Ah Yat had open receivers. He either missed them or didn’t have time to go through his progressions. There wasn’t much vertical in the passing game other than Davis’s catch in the end zone. That has to change.

Good: we are almost good enough and we will have one more year to get there

Bad: The holding call did not impede the game and should have NEVER been called. If I were Hauk I would ask the Big Sky to fire the ref who called it. You cannot have a ref who makes such a marginal call and then a few plays latter ask for forgiveness by calling it on the opposing team. That's B. S.

Ugly: actions of some fans and players

Nope, don't agree. Nor do many people on the board. Progress wasn't impeded either, except by the block. Show us a still photo of the hold if you want to prove your point.

Here's all the proof I need. From Hooked in his first post in this thread. He's one of the best posters on egriz.

"TD being negated over a phantom hold was also game changing. I watched that play on replay several times"
lol. Does it really matter, PR? Many people on this board also agree it WAS a hold. Was it egregious? No. Did he take him to the ground? No. But many agree it was a hold...

And good for Hooked. I'm glad he agrees with you.

If I knew how to post a still photo (or if I cared that much) I would. But I don't. And I don't.

Water under the bridge.

Do you think when he threw that flag he knew we were going to score a TD on that play? Because it would have been a non-issue if Davis had been tackled behind the LOS or for no gain...people wouldn't even remember the call.

lol. All this "questionable call because the defender took himself out of the play" bullshit...

Whether or not that player could have actually MADE a play on the ball carrier has zero bearing on whether or not it was a hold. And THAT is a hold. Again, not horribly egregious but clearly visible and terribly timed. I'm sure Schaeffer was sick about it.

Big sky could give two sh#ts what "hauck" thinks.

Appreciate the angle and still frame from Rainey. Far different than the TV angle that I haven’t watched on a bigger screen than a phone yet. Disappointing as that was a great and clearly effective play call in the moment.

I do think there was a few really egregious holds that were of similar consequence on cats scoring drives as mentioned above. If you wonder why Lamson was able to extend for some yards in certain situations you should look at a few of those and realize he isn’t all world. He’s good, and had a great day, but…

Good:
*9 minute drive coming out of half scoring a go ahead TD with a great blend of pass and run. (1st TD cats have given up in the 3rd quarter since Oregon game)
*Griz taking what Cats gave them with quick, short passes to the boundary.
*Davis TD catch in the corner of the end zone and able to get foot down
Bad:
*Defense not able to get off the field on Cats last drive
*Holding call on Davis end around TD to get lead back
*AhYat missing a wide open TE and instead passes to Wortham on tipped pass pick 6
Ugly:
*Blocked FG attempt that never had a chance (too low)
*Watching some Cat player poor behavior after the game

Oh look, Rainey posted a photo of the hold.
However, the photo doesn't show a hold. It's a split second. Plays like that happen multiple times on every play in football. The player wasn't illegally impeded. Bad/wrong call. The Griz were "held" dozens of times much much worse than that with no call. None of those are illegal holds.

Dude, a photo only shows a split second. It is exactly what you asked for. Can you find in the rules where it notes which holds are legal? Also, even if there are worse holds, it doesn't make that not a hold? Your level of justification is amazing.

Nope, that's not enough to show a hold. The player wasn't illegally impeded. That happens multiple times on every single play of game.
No disagreement, that's why the word "hold" is in quotes. Those same Bobcat "holds" I observed were held onto for a long enough period of time, holding the defender back, to give the runner time to pass the defender, thus qualifying a impeding. Can't tell if that happened on this play from the snapshot but I'll take your word for it he did not impede the player by not letting go.
