Portland State Fires Barnum

I hope Bobby doesn’t bring him in. There is nothing to indicate Barnum would be an upgrade to the staff. He looks undisciplined himself and I see no recruiting advantages. Robby coming over seems very realistic and maybe he can fix special teams for the Griz. The bigger question is what players can the Griz pick off from their O or D lines? The answer might be none at this point.
Get on X and see who's in the transfer portal, with proven players like Peyton Wing.

As MRR said it Sounds like the Ship be sinking

His overall record? 39-75.

I saw the firing coming weeks ago. PSU’s AD didn’t return messages or calls. The university president, Ann Cudd, practically hung up on me when I offered her the chance to give Barnum a vote of confidence two weeks ago.

“I gotta run,” she said. “Tight schedule.”

PSU says it will pay Barnum out for the final year of his contract. I wondered for a couple of years what kept Barnum from throwing in the keys to save his sanity. Which is only to say that no coach in his right mind is going to want the job without the promise of more support from PSU’s administration. Anyone who follows PSU athletics knows that the football program has been put in an impossible position by an unserious university. The scholarships are 50 percent funded. There’s no external fundraising, which means no revenue sharing or NIL collective. The team doesn’t even have a home football stadium. Billings — the AD — is in over his head. He’s miscast as an AD and woefully inadequate as a fundraiser. The dirty little secret is that Billings is being as ked by his president to trim nearly $3 million from the athletic department budget over the next two fiscal years. He needs to cut $1 million by next July, per a source in the president’s office. I’ll bet PSU leaves that tidbit out of the job posting.

Paul Wulff is a good recruiter and a great offensive line coach. Also too loyal to a few assistants. Wulff was Big Sky coach of the year three times at EWU, another school with little to to no resources.
I remember Wulff having to set up his own QB club sessions, projector and all at EWU. No help.

I just watched Davis Alexander will Montreal to the Greycup. We didn't hear much about him in Grizzlyville, but he was second only to Neil Lomax in the record books at PSU. That says something about Barnum's offense and his recruiting.
Ten of Barnum's players at PSU went pro during his head coaching tenure from 2015 to 2024, 14 if you include his time as PSU OC.

I doubt Robby Hauck landed at Portland State because he couldn't get a gig somwhere else.
