Portland State Fires Barnum

Did him dirty, fired him on the tarmac. Hopefully Bobby brings him in (keep hearing they have a great relationship). If he does would he be an assistant to Pease?

I hope Bobby doesn’t bring him in. There is nothing to indicate Barnum would be an upgrade to the staff. He looks undisciplined himself and I see no recruiting advantages. Robby coming over seems very realistic and maybe he can fix special teams for the Griz. The bigger question is what players can the Griz pick off from their O or D lines? The answer might be none at this point.

Given what Robby has to work with, I don’t know that those numbers are terrible. Especially with one of the tougher schedules in all of FCs. I would certainly take the field goal percentage every day of the week over 56%. The way I read it, UM has a 44% success rate. That is terrible. Also, bad judgement yesterday on returning kicks. Robby would also be able to sneak a few more tackles in to pad his record.

I honestly think Barney wouldn't be the worst hire. You just have to find the right spot for him. He mentioned earlier this year that, "He loves watching good Portland state football players, they are just being good players on other teams they transferred to." (Obviously not verbatim).

He might be a pretty decent recruiter or at least have an eye for talent. Just a thought.

The real question is do we have a Special teams coach on staff? Bobby serves the role currently. I’m assuming we see Robby on staff before Barnum.

As for Portland State, the press release said the entire staff has been let go, so that means Robby is probably not in consideration. I think the only viable route for PSU to go with their search is the D2 ranks. There’s a lot of D2 schools that are funded like PSU so it’d be easier for a guy like that to get a grasp with the challenges that exist there. Maybe a guy like Chris Fisk at Central Washington would entertain it?

It felt like you guys were maybe starting to turn the corner a little bit though. I forgot you guys hired a new AD last month though. I see he has Stanford ties. Any speculation as to who might be some of the candidates?
One name stands out. Troy Taylor. He won 3 straight Big Sky Championships at Sac State that has done nothing before or since Taylor. It ended ugly at Stanford and our new AD came from Stanford so I don’t know if that helps or hurts Taylor’s chances.

Recruiting to Poly is so much different than SSU. It's similar to Stanford which takes a special kind of coach. I would be leary of Taylor. Great coach but probably not a fit for Cal Poly. I think they should try to poach Mat Coombs or Paul Shelton from UCD.

I'm surprised they thought he was the problem. Why would anyone want that position? Seems like only way psu could succeeded is if they somehow got strong connection to Oregon or Oregon St and could basically be their minor league team.
