Big Sky Con Fantasy Playoffs

The Semifinals are here with #1 rocklobster vs #4 Grizband and #2 Alabamagrizzly vs #3 AZGrizFan. #5 T and #6 Elrod will also face off for 5th/6th after losing their quarterfinals matchups last week. #7 Everett and #8 Boscoe ended their seasons last week in the Toilet Bowl, with Everett being the top turd.


Heres the matchups.

#1 rocklobster vs #4 Grizband
These two faced off twice during the regular season with rocklobster taking both wins, including a final week of the regular season win with #1 seed on the line. Sac St's RB Rodney Hammond has surged latley, helping rocklobster rise to the top, but two of his top players may be out this week in UM's Brooks Davis and UCD's Carter Vargas. UM's Korbin Hendrix will be making his first fantasy start this week though after a breakout last week. Grizband will need UM's Ah Yat snd Wortham to step up with big games vs PSU. When they do well, he does well. UCD's WR Samuel Gbatu is another playmaker he will need to step up if he wants a shot at the chipper.

#2 Alabamagrizzly vs #3 AZGrizFan
In the other semifinal, AZGriz will try to show that his two regular season victories over Bama were no fluke. His MSU QB Justin Lamson and Montana Def and Special Teams units have carried him this far. He did lose his upstart WSU RB Sylvester for the season but ISU's RB Dason Brooks has been a constant contributor for him. Bama's #1 playmaker, UCD QB Caden Pinneck has the tuff task of going up against MSU's Def which is the tops in the con, and also is on Bama's team. He will definitely need his skill positions to step up this week and play above their average with any shot at advancing.

#5 T(Elrod friend) vs #6 Elrod Grizzly
In the 5th/6th place game, Elrod and T square off after losing their quarterfinal matchups last week. T bested Elrod in their one regular season matchup with his 2nd highest point output of the season but he'll have to match that with Elrod riding the hot hand lately, or at least till last week. Elrod has two of the best receivers in the league in ISU's Michael Shulikov and NAU's Kolby Katsis. T shows off one of the biggest surprises of the year in UNC's WR Carver Cheeks but losing his EWU QB Nate Bell to injury may be too much to overcome.

Last weekend was the BSC Fantasy playoff Semifinals and we had some good matchups, one a nail biter and the other a record setter.

In the first semifinal #1 rocklobster took on #4 Grizband and barley pulled off a squeaker of a victory, winning by three points. Grizbands QB, Keali'i Ah Yat had a great day and Grizband made the smart move of benching Davis's Def for EWU's at the last minute, which turned out to be a +24 point roster move. Unfortunately he got little support from the rest of his team, as did rocklobster, both scoring below their season averages. With less then average performances by most all of rock's key players, his bench rose to the occasion, and was the difference. Korbin Hendrix made his first fantasy start and played well securing a TD. Rocklobster also took advantage of the retro sub rule, and for the first time all season, the rule ended up being the difference. Rock's star flex player, UCD's Carter Vargas DNP'd, allowing rock to supplement Fonoti into the lineup and his 9.5 points gave rock a three point win, much to the chagrin of Grizband.

In the second semifinal #2 Alabamagrizzly took on #3 AZGrizFan but unfortunately for Bama, only one team showed up to play and they showed out. AZGriz, who went 3-0 vs Bama this year, set the new game high in team points shattering the old mark by over 10 points. AZ got big performances by his MSU QB, Lamson, one of his ISU WR's, Damien Morgan, and his Montana Def. His other ISU WR, former Bama #1 pick Ian Duarte, also had a career day against his former team. Bama had two starters no show and a goose egg from his UM WR, Bohannon who dropped a wide open TD pass. His MSU Def set the high mark for defensive points at 42 but only receiving 16.5 points from five other players proved to be too big a hill to climb.

In the 5th/6th Place matchup, Elrod continued to ride his hot streak and secure 5th place, after staying in 8th most of the season. A monster game from his NAU combo of QB Pennington and WR Katsis scoring 69 points was almost enough by themselves to match T's total output. Modest performances by Idaho RB Nate Thomas and UCD WR Stacy Dobbins were enough to help secure the victory. T, who's roster has been depleted by injuries(3rd string QB) and under expected production(EWU receivers), did not have enough to overcome Elrods new found offensive output. Now both teams are looking to the offseason to rebuild and come back stronger next year.

Thats a wrap. The inaugural season of the Big Sky Con Fantasy Football League is in the books and i dare say, I think it was pretty successful. After 10 weeks of the regular season, 3 weeks of playoffs, and about 4,000 free agent signings, we now have our first champion. Here's the matchup results.

In the chipper rocklobster was able to edge out AZGrizFan in the smallest of margins, thanks largely to a pick six by his NAU Defense. He also received a huge 20+ point day from UM WR Brooks Davis and Sac RB Rodney Hammond, who were able to counter the abysmal production from his QB, Idaho's Josh Woods. AZGriz received decent performances by recent FA signings CP RB Tyrei Washington and ISU WR Ian Durate, on top of league MVP, MSU QB Justin Lamson but it was not enough to overcome. Now AZ has to live through the offseason knowing if he'd just benched his MVP QB for his back up ISU QB, maybe things would've been different.

The 3rd/4th Place match wasn't nearly the nail bitter the chipper was. Grizband defeated Alabama fairly easily with big games from UCD WR Samuel Gbatu and EWU's Def. Bama had big days from bench players NAU WR Isaiah Eastman and UNC's Def but attrition was the real foe of Bama with injuries to his top WR, CP's Micheal Briscoe and NAU RB Quran Gossett. Losing those two was just too much to overcome.
