LadyGriz Lady Griz Vs. BYU

Two Questions:
1.) Why didn't Nate Harris take a time out during the Lady Griz's last possession of the game to set up a play?
2,) Wouldn't a Mack Konig drive to the basket (with a possible layup or two free throws) have been a better option than a three point shot at the end of the game?

Asked those same questions
First one, came to the conclusion that he was concerned, if he took a time out that they would have a trouble with the inbound pass.History has proven that we've had trouble with that.
Second one, man I have no idea for that one, Other then, everybody in the entire place knew thats what was going to happen.
Here's a question maybe someone can answer. Darsky was 2 for 2 from 3 Gillette, was 2 for 3 from 3. Why did land shoot the ball? She was 2 for 8

1. With a timeout, you give the defense a chance to get set and Nate Harris might have been thinking with the TO he took about a couple of minutes earlier, that he had the right 5 on the court and had them set for the defense BYU was going to run.
2. On the last play, it looked like they had Konig set to dribble penetrate to the basket but BYU had a taller player on Konig and playing soft to prevent it. On the ball rotation, Land was open and she's a shooter. A shooter's got a shoot.

I thought the last play strategy was sound. Land has been the best perimeter shooter over previous games. Griz were playing percentages.

The same question (posed by Copper King) could have been pondered over the previous 1:30 seconds where Griz shooters missed 3-4 open perimeter shots.

It was a good game. GrizWBB played solid defense considering a huge BYU advantage in the paint. Montana stuck with its game plan and it worked through much of the second half. Who knows why a team misses 3-4 open shots in a crucial, high tension game-closing span?

My conclusion: Great game. Tons of fun. Good attendance. Electric atmosphere. Way better to play a team like this and lose than to play a DII team & blow them out by 30. Basketball at its best. GoGrizWBB.

P.S. Good teams learn from losses like this.

A shooters got to shoot, absolutely, but before you call your self a shooter you need to make enough baskets to be called a shooter. 14 for 43 maybe a little more practice shooting quick. Just saying

Here is the stat sheet for the game: https://gogriz.com/sports/womens-basketball/stats/2025/byu/boxscore/6334 Someone mentioned shooting, I believe we have plenty of talent, so good to know we are early in the season, so lots of development to come. The game went generally well enough against a formidable team. The LG looks more up tempo compared to past years, our D looks much improved. Our two vet's Konig and Waddington (only a soph!), holding us together. Konig turn overs x6...huh, FG and 3's this game ok, but not stellar. Konig's legs? ok? looks like both with heavy supports? I noticed Waddington's eye a little swelled up, her D shined in this game, versatile player. Once we sharpen up, we have more shooters than ever, those shots drop...LG will shine. Great team to watch!!! GO LG!!

Listened to last few minutes while driving. The 3 attempt at roughly 2 min mark by Ehrman huge. Early shot clock FG attempt, up 3 with 2 min. Next possession 3 by BYU and game momentum switched.

17 2FG attempts the whole game....like previous posts mentioned....attack the basket. Get layup, draw foul???? Time out or no time out taken they were down 2 with ball in hands. They controlled what the outcome was. Just didnt knock down the shot.

1 key to winning games is FTs taken and made, not gonna shoot many with only 17 2 FG attempts.

Waddington is a really good player. Will she be featured in the offense more as season moves forward? Haven't had a chance to watch but from numbers Land is getting a clear green light to shoot.

Attack the basket would have been my best bet, if dropped great, if fouled drop the two great! Interesting offense sets this time around, that splits the defense up around the key, we get the ball movement we want, we have the shooters...bingo! We dribble drive, to the rim or opt for the open shooter...bingo. But we have to rebound! They had Waddington and Konig alternately bringing the ball up court, that in my opinion is great strategy. Waddington can dribble drive, shoot outside, post...really offsets a defense....who wants to pressure D a 6'3 dribble driver, outside shooter, post up player...you'll end up fouling her!

I saw an LG team massively better than what I saw in Seattle when we lost to Washington. That's a huge positive IMO. We've gone from getting blown out,,, to a one point loss. We are getting better.

I think most of our troubles are just learning to play together and role clarity.(We have a lot of new faces and it's gonna take time) Some of Konig's TO's were passes to players who cut when they shouldn't have or didn't cut when she thought they would. We still need a mountain of work to get our defense and especially, our double teams better, but Nate has said as much. I think he and his staff are systematically working through the weakness and we are seeing the strides they are making.

Rae Ehrman is going to be a nightmare for opponents. I'm going to enjoy watching her develop as the season goes on.

On the flip side, I'm a bit concerned about Lincoln's development. Has she been hindered by injuries?

IDK
Game before she played seven minutes without an assist, no rebounds and no points scored. Nothing.
Next game played but one minute; maybe it's disciplinary. You know, try and do something out there sort of deal.
Personally, maybe start her at the post position (5). God knows we need someone there. 'Live by the three die by the three' - defense is completely missing with the Frontcourt.

Twelve (12) guards and only two (2) forwards?

There's a different analysis to the game that is having more teams shooting threes. 33% from 3pt range equals 50% 2pt shooting. More girls are shooting in the high 30s/low 40s percentage which is better than 50% from 2pt range.

But, those teams that shoot 50% from inside the arc will likely have more attempts because they will get more offensive rebounds. There is a reason Lady Griz only had 3 offensive rebounds because this offense has everybody outside of the 3 point line with nobody around to to get the offensive rebound. Lady Griz offense as I see it now is a shoot once per possession team.

Sac State's offense 5 to 10 years ago concentrated on 3 point shooting, but different from what the Lady Griz is doing. They liked full court press, steal the ball as quickly as possible and shoot a 3. Scored a lot of points even while shooting 33% from the 3. Problem with them is that if they couldn't steal the ball on the press, their defense sucked at the other end so they would still lose while scoring over 80 points.

Lady Griz may be playing at a higher pace but not nearly as high of a pace that Sac State played. I do believe Lady Griz will have shoot closer to 40% from the arc to be able to win at the pace they play at. I believe it is more close to 40 to 45% from 3 point line to 50% from 2 point line given that those teams that concentrate on 2 point shots will have more attempts due to better offensive rebounding.

Or just play better on defense inside the arc. Lost to a team that shot just 18-19% from 3 point line and sucked badly at the freethrow line.

Everyone knows that math GrizMN. The issue is you gotta make baskets. 3s or 2s the ball had to get in the hole.

3 and D ball only goes so far in college bball. This isnt a jab at LG staff either. Gotta find a niche to recruit too and maybe this is it. 3 and D requires both making threes and getting stops however.
