Big Sky:

UM is last in passing yards given up. 263 yards, compared to the best, MSU at 198. So, a difference of 65 yards per game. Not much. Empty calories as one astute poster has said. UM is averaging 289 yards passing per game, compared to the Cats' 211. A difference of 78. So, UM is "netting" 13 more, i.e. is better, in passing yards than MSU.

MSU and UM are nos. 1 and 2 in pass defense efficiency, with 115 and 120.

UM is first in interceptions with 18. MSU is tied for 4th with 10. UM has 25 sacks. MSU has 20 sacks.

FCS:

UM is 7th in nation in red zone defense. MSU is 29th.

UM tied for 3d in interceptions. MSU is tied for 40th.

UM is 23d in sacks. MSU is 93d.

MSU gives up 9.36 per catch. UM 12.28 per catch. UM gives up 7.16 per attempt. MSU 5.65 per attempt.

UM has given up 15 passing TD's. MSU 12.

Interesting stats and MSU’s stats don’t look so dominant when you put it down on paper.
One more stat. Both teams are pretty disciplined. MSU is #1 in the conference with 58 = 456 yards. (Position in the BSC is based on penalty yardage, not total #). Griz are tied for 8th with 61 penalties = 548 yards.

People were bitching in the game thread that we only had like 156 yards of offense and PSU had like 260 in the first half…yeah, because we had “drives” of 2, 23 and 25 yards or something like that because of defensive takeaways. Would they rather every drive have to go the length of the field to pile up meaningless statistics?

To some, a drive of 80+ yards that doesn't result in a TD is worth more than a drive of 20 yards ending in a TD.
 
In conference the cats scoring defense has been very good. MSU give up 11.7pts/game less than half of the next best.
UCD 24.1
UM 24.3

Rush defense the griz lead 103.0 YPG
MSU is 2nd giving up 103.9 YPG

This is a good point. Griz are a great red zone defense as usual.

Surprised by the MSU red zone numbers. Does this count game vs Oregon? They've allowed so few points in conference....how can red zone numbers be 29th in country?

Both the cats and Griz websites match the numbers I have, so still not sure what you were looking at.

Either way, you're right that the redzone defense has been great for the Griz, and 5 of those empty redzone possessions were in games we won by 1 score (2 against UND, 1 against ISU, 2 against EWU).

65 yards is nearly 7 more first downs for the opposing offense and almost 20 more plays that your defense is on the field and your offense is watching. You are dumb.

Or it could be two plays for 32 and 33 yards, which would water down your argument. It’s why I hate stats. They are often misleading. They also don’t point to injuries and who was out for key games. Does 65 yards matter? Yes. Does it make a substantial difference? More than likely it doesn’t.

I think it makes it worse because chunk plays are demoralizing, and it means your defense is expending energy running down the field.

There have been games this year that fit the description above unfortunately. Let’s hope this Saturday the stats page for the Griz D ends up being stellar.
