DB recruiting and NIL allotment to that position?

annoyingly very little to none of the NIL $ allocations are ever made public. Seems like we have 3 DB’s that can realistically match up and play tough with good WR’s, and one of them is Loud who may or may not come back. Are the Griz really that paper thin at the position or will some of these guys develop into solid players? Statistically our secondary is bottom of the big sky. Did recruiting blow their load on the offense?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t the 3-3-5 supposed to be GOOD at defending the pass, what with the extra pass defender in the system?
Yes, 10-0. Longest pass given up was 33. When your guys are hurt, keep everything in front of you. 35th in nation in pass efficiency defenses. Cats much better. UNC 34th. So third in conference. Tied for 3d in nation in interceptions.

No teams are releasing them, to my knowledge. That would absolutely be a cancer in any locker room, and a huge ceding of competitive advantage to competing teams. There are very, very few people that know what every athlete on the team is getting. Some know a couple, and you hear rumors, but the University is just never going to be releasing NIL figures.

That being said, no, they didn't spend all the money on offense. Part of the NIL money some kids are getting is also outside the team's hands with some sponsorship and clothing deals that are out there. NIL is still largely in the "Wild West" phase of existence, but offensive players are almost always going to get more TV commercials and gear that defensive players, so it may seem like more went to them from the local community, but I know factually that people have stepped up to make sure defensive players get paid and have been since the start of the NIL era.

To answer your question about the secondary, we lost some guys, and needed to reset. The staff coaches focused big on adding some guys to that could compete and play and have been for the last couple of years. Harper, Wilkenson, Ford, Cutler, Wolf, Lawler, Davis, Breston and Ridgeway were all transfer additions. Obviously you don't hit on all of them, but five of those guys are getting run. Combine that with the underclasses we have brought in with the Beaner Brothers, Dane Parker, Boyd, and Gentry, and it looks to me like they have been going really hard to get reinforcements there for the DBs. I'm sure there are a number of other young guys I'm forgetting that may end up contributing.

We've seen improvement, too.. but gotta get more consistent at playing the ball, and Some of those passes were launched out of desperation by the qb as he was getting hammered, they caught some, and a few huge PI calls. However, the fact remains we had the defense in the field for 97 plays, and that shit falls on the offense for this game. We simply cant revert to an offense that can't convert 3rd downs and stay on the field, especially down the stretch.
Looking at the time of possession in the 2nd half, it was 21 to 9 in eastern's favor. This matters very little, IF the team with less time is hitting big plays and scoring TDs. We obviously were not Saturday. Our defense, quite frankly, balled out, and was dog tired at the end.

100% agree. There were some miracle throws (and catches) under tremendous pressure. The ineffectiveness Jekyl/Hyde performance of the offense is more frustrating to me than any perceived defensive issues.

Yes, there are definitely some things to like about the D. Starting to get to the QB much more often than early in the season. Bailey & Ramos are picking up their effectiveness, Mason is a beast, Detrick appears healthy for the first time, Otlewski is the animal we thought he’d be, and Wing is phenomenal. About the only guy who hasn’t really impressed yet (and appears to be losing playing time to Oven at this point) is Tolbert.

Backside injuries have cost us some there, but if they all stay, Loud and Rouch and Gentry and the Beaner Brothers all look very good for as young as they are. Lawler is good, Ford has a ways to go (but has made some great plays) and the others are serviceable.

They have been pretty good at bending not breaking. The turnovers they have produced have been great as well. It's just tough having our best DB out most of the year and having to turn to true freshman who understandably will make mistakes but by all accounts have been pretty good considering they are not even a full semester into college. Also I'm pretty sure Wolf and Cutler have been hurt, and it's well known Harper has been playing banged up too. I've been wondering if Dane Parker, Breston, or even Finn Rideway might start getting in the mix but I think they have all been injured as well.

You're absolutely right. I know I have said this on here, but a couple of those bailout PI calls were atrocious and game changing. Particularly the last one that landed so far out of bounds it was completely obviously uncatchable, while our DB was the one being held back by the WR. If that isn't called, we get the stop and walk away with a MUCH better looking victory and we would significantly less hand wringing within Griz Nation.

the last one was atrocious. DB has every right to the football as the receiver. Usually don't see that called when head is looking back for ball.

And when neither of them had any realistic chance of getting to the ball. It was uncatchable. That PI call was indefensible, in my opinion, and it absolutely set the momentum and finish into place. There was another one, too, and if not for those two calls you can probably knock 60-100 yards of off EWU's passing totals.

Exactly! Most officials wouldn't throw that flag. hand fighting is usually permitted as long as there is no jersey tugging or arm clamping.

😂 I’ll admit, I didn’t play past high school and know very little about the recruiting world esp in the age of NIL. I should’ve phrased the question in a less accusatory manner, I know it’s not easy. That said, it’s hard not to compare to little bro’s defense and wonder what they’re doing differently. Injuries have obviously taken their toll and it’s hard to account for that.

100% agree on the above commentary, also note that was perhaps the worst / least favorable officiating crew in the league. When I see that white hat on the field, I cringe as to whats to come. There are some good crews in our league, that ain't one of them.
