Defense

What is the deal with Loud? When will he be back? He is BY FAR our best CB. Other teams are abusing us without him. Nobody could cover Pruett, and as others have said even a 3rd-string frosh had a field day.
Pro scout was there looking at Pruett. I imagine there are scouts at every game looking at players on both sides.

In all FCS, Griz are now 117/126 in passing defense. They’re just 9 spots shy of being the very worst pass defense in the entire FCS…….. unbelievable. Either Roger and Tim aren’t cutting it as coordinators, or the scheme has got to go. How do they not see that the numbers they’re giving up through the air is a problem.

Griz are also dead last in passing defense in the big sky. Sadly I doubt hauck will change anything. It’s his brother that’s the coordinator after all. Co defensive coordinator I guess. I’d be ok with an entire defensive makeover. New coordinators, new CBs coach…..just wipe the slate clean. These guys have put two years of trash defense on their resume. Just freaking hard to watch. Meanwhile the team down the interstate is playing historically good defense. Maybe we should be looking for a coordinator that can mimic their scheme, since it’s got them top 25 in most all statistical categories

You of all people should have confidence in the team beating the Cats. Surprises me. The Cats don’t scare me in the least. The supposedly good Cat DL and D have only 14 sacks. The Cats have lost to the only 2 good teams they played. Jones is hardly an MVP. Some of my Cat friends don’t think the QB will last. He goes hard into too many tackles. The Griz red zone D has been better. The Griz have much better coaching. The game is at home. Cats gave up 3 sacks today on relatively few passes. The Griz have more picks. Griz are protecting Ah Yat well recently and he is playing very well. The Griz get every conference team’s best shot. The Cats don’t. I wonder if the Cats have self doubts about playing in Missoula.
Yeah, admittedly I hope I'm just overreacting.

I still think we can beat them, especially if the offense plays lights out, but there are just so many red flags and our defense seems to be getting less healthy instead of healthier.

I do appreciate your optimism, though!

Griz are dead first in wins of conference teams.

Now do pass efficiency rating.

I see a lot of criticism regarding our pass defense. I think it is deserved. It does appear to me that there is significant increase in substitutions , especially with the safeties. Is this normal "Bobby Ball"? I would think we are at a point in the season where we are not still evaluating our players. Go with the better ones that want to hit.

Look on the bright side our OL is amazing!

People are keying in so much on our total passing number given up, but I thought I'd give some other metrics and where we stand.

Note: I'm not trying to convince you this defense is good. I think by Griz standards, it is clearly subpar, but I just want to provide some context.

We are last in the conference at passing yards given up per game at 318.2 (in conference only). Big deal, we know lol

We are 6th in the conference in both yards per attempt (7.4) and completion percentage allowed (60.6%).

We are 2nd in attempts per TD at 32.4. MSU is #1 at 46. The next best team is Cal poly at 21.6.
The last two stats are why we're 2nd in pass efficiency D.
Fun fact: we have a better pass efficiency D than SIU, SDSU, South Dakota, YSU and Illinois State. All of those teams have given up as many or more passing TDs in conference play as we have. We also have defended at least 60 more passing attempts against us than all of them. (Yeah I know, different conference, but thought it was interesting, regardless)

We are 1st in INTs at 9.
We're 2nd in sacks at 17 (fun to note that we were in last just a few weeks ago).

We give up the exact same yards per carry on the ground as the dominant MSU defense (3.2 ypc).
The big difference is that we have allowed 11 rushing TDs, while they have only allowed 3.

We're tied for 3rd in yards per play at 5.7.

Hoops brought this up in another thread, but conversions are rough.
We are 8th in conference in 1st downs allowed per game (21). This is the worst we've been since 2019 (22.4)
We are 9th in opponent 3rd down conversion rate (43%). This is the worst we've been since....EVER???
Seriously, the stats go back to 1994, and this is the worst conference opponent 3rd down conversion rate we've had. 4 years were above 40% (2001, 2012, 2013, and 2014), but this is the worst that I can find. Woof.

Extra woof: For the first time since 2013, our offensive 3rd down conversion rate is actually worse than we are allowing our opponents at 39.3%

We're 2nd in red zone defense (76%), but 5th in red zone TDs given up (15). We've allowed 12 more redzone attempts than MSU this season. This is probably the main argument someone might make against the idea that yards are empty calories. The more yards you give up, the more chances to score the opponent has.

But most importantly, we are 3rd in scoring defense at 25.5/game.

Anyways, like I said, not trying to change minds, but thought it was an interesting look at this defense.

Thanks for stats. The Griz are up there in few national stats too. As I posted elsewhere.

I don’t agree that the D is subpar for the Griz. I like the D. Just want Loud back. Want to be able to play more man. I like that the D isn’t giving up long plays and, in 63 attempts in the lat game, the longest pass was 33 yards. The D withstood 93 plays and a QB who got hit and was tough. Best said this was the first game their receivers had caught the ball well. Red zone D of 4-7 was very good.

I have never seen a game with such terrible 3d down efficiency on both sides of the ball. Note that I started my 3d down thread from the stadium when game was still going on. End of 3d or early in 4th.

Bobby substitutes and rotates on D a lot. Always has. They are not evaluating players.

What a dumb post.

Defense is playing well, but inconsistent. We have to clean the 3rd down stoppage rate up ASAP.

However, yesterday was on the offense. Only 117 yards in the second half and couldn't convert enough on 3rd downs.

3rd down conversions:
Um-1/10
EWU-11/21
