Good, Bad, Ugly - EWU

Good:

- offense started off on fire and had 22 points early (which they’ve done often this year)
- Ah Yat was dialed in early and ended up 22/30 for 250 and 2 TDs
- Gillman went over 1000 yards for the season today
- defense had 8 sacks
- Detrick with a big game, had 3 sacks and multiple TFL
- that one handed TD grab by Hendrix was a thing of beauty
- the punt return by Deck was a fantastic start
- Wortham had 160 all purpose yards and a TD
- an awesome and athletic INT by Lawler

Bad:
- this pass defense making every QB look all world
- gave up way too many 3rd and longs
- this coaching staff thinking they can go up 2-3 scores and just cruise control. They get way vanilla and play with no urgency. Almost came back to haunt them today. We’ve seen it against sacred heart, Weber, and now EWU. Figure it the fuck out.

Ugly:
- that QB fumble trying to spike the ball
- our kick return team on that on side kick. Get aggressive and jump on the damn ball. It’s like 2-3 guys were scared of the thing

A win is a win but that was as ugly as a win as I can remember. 10-0 still feels good. They have some major flaws on pass defense.

Feel free to add!

Good:

-1st Quarter on both Offense and Defense
-Getting the Turnovers and Sacks, one which setup Gilman TD run
-The sweet 1 handed TD catch by Hendrix

Bad and Ugly:

-The remaining 3 Quarters outside of a few bright spots (see above) for the Offense, Defense and Special Teams
-Coaching and play calling in particular was frustrating, 2 weeks in a row where we get up by a few scores and then take our foot off their throats. In this case, it almost cost us the game.
-Refs calling an incomplete pass a fumble

Thanks for your assessment. . I understand wanting to keep it vanilla, but sheesh, there's Hagendaas vanilla and Albertson's generic vanilla. This was very Albertson's. It's okay to throw some syrup or whip cream on the play calling. I know you don't want to show anything before the Brawl, but if not for a mishandled snap, this could have been really shitty for the playoffs.
Good: First Quarter.
Defensive moxy.
Bad: 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarters offensively vanilla.
Ugly: Really ugly. TOP: EWU 38 Minutes, Griz 22. Sustained drives are needed.
Go Griz!!!

- the punt return by Deck was a fantastic start
- Wortham had 160 all purpose yards and a TD
- an awesome and athletic INT by Lawler [The UM D had a terrific 4th Q, when they were on the field most of the Q. Gave up only 3 in first 29 minutes of 2d half, and only 10 in total]

Bad:
- this pass defense making every QB look all world
- gave up way too many 3rd and longs [Agreed, as does everyone else]
- this coaching staff thinking they can go up 2-3 scores and just cruise control. [I don't think the coaches go on cruise control] They get way vanilla and play with no urgency. [I don't think they play without urgency] Almost came back to haunt them today. We’ve seen it against sacred heart, Weber, and now EWU. Figure it the fuck out.

Ugly:
- that QB fumble trying to spike the ball [I thought it was a thing of beauty. I put it in the Good. Ha]
- our kick return team on that on side kick. Get aggressive and jump on the damn ball. It’s like 2-3 guys were scared of the thing

A win is a win but that was as ugly as a win as I can remember. [I didn't think it was an ugly win] 10-0 still feels good. They have some major flaws on pass defense. [EWU's longest pass was 33 yards. EWU had good receivers, or they had games of their life. A CFL scout was at the game to watch one of them. UM had 8 sacks. I'm all for improving the pass D too. I would say getting Loud and the other injured guys back would be nice]

Questionable:

Starting in the 2nd qtr we started all our drives but one with Gillman running the ball.
He ran once for 8 yds, 4 times for 2 yds, twice for 1 yd and once he ran it and lost a yd.
The one drive we started with a pass was our last possession of the 2nd half and we threw it on 1st down for 8 yds.
I have to believe that the Ewoo defense was told to expect Gillman to run the ball on the first play of every drive.

The Bad: Griz allowing a redshirt freshman QB in WA-Griz to throw for 450 yards.

Also for those watching on TV. Did it seem like EWU got away with a ton of holding? Maybe we did to but I was more focused on Griz D getting held.

I guess it depends. Do you think it's bad when our guy has an o-lineman's arm around his throat holding him back from behind? I mean seems bad to me but nobody thrrw a flag so maybe it's just me.

Been like this for a while now, not just EW. Even Bobby mentioned it today in the team presser. Gillman breaks one or two every game running up the center on first down. Certainly not smart offensive play calling. Other teams know from past film what will happen and they load the box.

Ugly---- the inflection point of the game was the fake punt that didn't work. What the hell was Bob thinkin??? Gave the ball back to EWU at mid-field and they proceeded to march down and score----put themselves within reach and then, with the brilliantly executed on-side kick, they marched down the field again, and save for a fumbled snap/spike, they would have won. Geeesh---that was truly ugly.

It's hard to get out-coached by Aaron Best but BH proved it can be done.

The failure of the fake did not turn over the ball at mid-field. I liked the call. There is nothing wrong with taking a calculated risk where there was little downside.

IF yesterdays Griz game play/finish we’re just a one off it would not be any issue…..

However a pattern of game play appears to be formed.

Love the griz but not feeling optimistic going forward, observing this pattern and expectations of winning out.

Ah Yat sure looks like he is "getting it". Dig what he has become and is doing. The rest I am not sure. Hope it is just sandbagging/resting guys. Boobcats look like they are a real tough guy team.

The great Cat DL and D has only 14 sacks. How do you explain that? Neither their OL or running game is even close to what they have had in recent years (according to what a former starting Cat OL told me).
