Defense

Our D played well considering they were on the field almost 38 minutes of the game, 37:48, 2/3rd's of the game Yes, we gave up over 400 yards of passing, but that was Eastern's only option since they couldn't run the ball very well--they ran for a whopping 28 yards while we ran for 101 against them.

And a season-high 8 sacks and 2 picks show that our D could absorb some punishment while inflicting more on Eastern. !!!

If our O had been a little to somewhat more effective on their side of the ball, the TOP wouldn't have been so lopsided EWU: 37:48 to GRIZ 22:12, and our D's stats would have been moderately to considerably better. !!!

Our D played relatively well today considering they spent most of the game on the field, but our offense and their 1/13 conversion rate on 3rd down played poorly, especially in the second half, and that's why we almost lost the game when combined with Eastern's tenacity and heroic effort this afternoon !!!

Anyone claiming that our defense played well today is either deaf and blind or has football-specific dementia. It is beyond all logic and reason to try to argue that this defense is Natty caliber.

Mediocre to bad teams have consistently thrown the ball up and down field on this defense all season. We may be able to get away with this on a stacked home schedule featuring a putrid Big Sky lineup, but this kind of shit will not hold up against playoff caliber opponents.

One last thing I'll say before bed is that if I absolutely had to choose, I would choose a horrible pass defense over a horrible run defense 10 times out of 10, and this defense has proven all season that they can stop the run when they need to (so far lol). That's about the best thing I can say about it right now.

We desperately need Loud back, which will allow us to play more man where this defense thrives.

Brother in Christ, the worst team in the conference had almost 500 yards of offense led by a 3rd string frosh with zero starts. This same team score exactly 3 points against the Cats. Any way you slice it, that is not “good defense”.

I’ve come to have a begrudging appreciation of how you and Hoops can say everything is A-ok no matter what, despite almost an entire season of tape proving otherwise, but this is getting absurd.

Sure, having Loud out there makes all the difference in the world (I think he's our best and most important defender on the team), but he hasn't been healthy and may not be healthy before the playoffs, and depending on when that is, it might be too late.

This team needs home field so bad in the playoffs, and right now I don't see us beating bozeman and earning it.
You of all people should have confidence in the team beating the Cats. Surprises me. The Cats don’t scare me in the least. The supposedly good Cat DL and D have only 14 sacks. The Cats have lost to the only 2 good teams they played. Jones is hardly an MVP. Some of my Cat friends don’t think the QB will last. He goes hard into too many tackles. The Griz red zone D has been better. The Griz have much better coaching. The game is at home. Cats gave up 3 sacks today on relatively few passes. The Griz have more picks. Griz are protecting Ah Yat well recently and he is playing very well. The Griz get every conference team’s best shot. The Cats don’t. I wonder if the Cats have self doubts about playing in Missoula.

The D played well much of the time today and won the game for the team in the 2d half. Jeez, focus on the whole game not one or two stats. The QB was good and very tough. He’s their first team QB now.

Very good post. Why can’t some of our fans see that? It seems so obvious to me, and you. Of course, the team isn’t perfect. Isn’t dominant all the time or enough. Almost no team ever is. Needs to keep improving. That’s what it’s doing. Today wasn’t a setback. It was part of the progress of continuing to be a better team. How many times have the Griz been 10-0? Not many. It’s a huge accomplishment. Were some of these Griz fans born without confidence? I know some were born negative. If the team loses a regular season game, the world won’t end. They will get back up and win the next one. This team has very good talent and a huge will to win. It’s been a terrific and fun season.

So in other words the defense played as bad as they usually do but the offense didn't bail them out like normal. Yeah that gives me a lot of confidence going forward.

So in other words, our D bailed out our O and we won the game !!! Our D made Eastern one dimensional, the Eagles couldn't run the ball, but the Eagles did have the ball for over 15 minutes longer than us, the Eagles played a great game but they also suffered 8 sacks and that was the biggest reason their star-young QB fumbled the ball on our 5 yard line--he heard footsteps along with the unsettling, rattling, huge deafening roar coming from WA-GRIZ and 2 picks to go along 😴 🙄 🤔 with their 450 yards of passing, and we won !!!

Reading some of the Danny and Debbie Downer posts, someone that didn't see the game would believe Eastern scored 50 or 60 points against us and won the game. But Eastern lost the game-- L O S T THE G A M E--and they scored 24 points-- 2 4. P O I N T S--not 50 or 60. !!!

Some of our fellow GRIZ--good men and women--wouldn't be happy if you were shot with a new gun, to use an Old West, Old Montana proverb : ( !!!

Take the W, learn from it, and move on, and we will. !!!

Go GRIZ. !!!

So, did Eastern score 60 or 70 points or 24. ?

Who had 8 sacks and 2 picks, Eastern or us. ?
Whose TOP was 37:48 and whose TOP was 22:12 ?

Do the conference standings list " W-L-MV," or still just " W-L," moral victories," despite you and the other Danny and Debbie Downers' wailing and whining, is not an official stat recognized by Eastern Coach Aaron Best, who said after the game we are a very good football team and " there are no moral victories, " also the view of the BSC and the NCAA.

No, the D played fairly well most of time and very well in 4th Q. Not great. Far from
perfect. 8 sacks. Very well in red one. 2 nice picks. Kept everything in front of them. Didn’t give up long plays. Shut down the run. D needed to do better on 3d and win more close situations. O needed way more first downs in second half. A win. 10-0.

I don’t know how you could even say “as bad as they usually do”. You are not watching and assessing the games and missing much of a so far terrific and historic season, in my view. To each his own.

Offense didn’t do you any favors going 1-10 on 3rd down. But your defense allowed first downs on 11 of their 3rd down attempts and they went 2-3 on 4th down. So I’d say your defense was partially responsible for being on the field 38 minutes.

I appreciate your relentless optimism and wish that I shared it.
I hope for the best and look for the positives in sport and in life. No matter the situation, I keep looking forward to find the path to success. It does no good to be negative or pessimistic and sometimes that is counterproductive. This team has the talent and desire to keep winning. They may or may not keep winning. I will support them fully. If they lose, I will be disappointed for them but not for myself and will not complain (except for the refs). I hope they play well and the ball bounces their way.

Good post. How can some of our fans not see that?

True. But at least 3 first downs were caused by incorrect PI calls. If the O had gotten 5 more first downs, the game wouldn’t have been close. And EWU wouldn’t have had time for its last drive and onside kick. The game would have been over. Heck, 2 more first downs would have probably prevented that. Given that Ewu had so many plays in general and in the 4th Q, and the O had 3 first downs in 2d half and none in the 4th Q, my game ball goes to the D.
