i gotta say i'm a bit surprised by the lack of conversation about the gambling charges leveled at current and former nba players, some mafioso, and others. while some may say the subject is a stretch to consider linked to the griz and the fcs, i disagree, given the prevalence comments regarding gambling on friz and fcs games right here on dear ol' egriz. i guess the question is, how the hell does one deal with this issue? anyone who has followed the news on this surely knows by now that this sort of stuff has been found in college sports more often than the pro's. what to do? leave it alone and hope you make money on your bets? hope that no one in the vicinity of the university of montana griz and/or other bsc teams would ever consider involvement in order to make a buck or three? vocally back legislation outlawing gambling on college sports, maybe even try for something state-specific? i'm not a gambler, but i am interested if anyone out there has an opinion on the matter, regardless of what that opinion entails.

I’m not a gambler either, but can you bet on player prop bets in the FCS? This seems to be the major issue right now.

I assume UM is too small of a place for much gambling of any size and for the mafia to come. But I don't know bet, except against Cat bigmouths and trolls, and don't understand any of the betting or odds stuff. Not my area.

I think we will look at gambling addictions as one of our next major health crisis. The fact that we’ve created apps and formats that are as easy to use and with the same qualities as handheld games and social media we’ve created a larger gambling population in the younger generation. A generation that sees no pathway to the America dream except to get lucky and hit it big. Similar to the mentality of striking it big as a social media influencer, or crypto king. The consequences are just one factor leading to suicide rates in our younger populous. There’s plenty of anecdotal accounts of kids getting themselves in a mountain of debt and taking their own lives. There’s also alarming studies of the rate of gambling in our society.

It shouldn’t surprise anyone and should make people think about how multi millionaires are so easily wrapped up in this with organized crime. Watching officiating alone at every level should tell you how easily games are manipulated to some degree to help the betting odds. There is far too much money for people not to want to reach their hand into the pot.

when i lived in la jolla, way back when in the early 2000's, i knew a guy who did all the video for a large sports bar that had both big tvs everywhere, and small ones at most tables. i'd always have him find the griz game for me and put it on the small tv at my table. anyway, the guy always knew who the griz were playing, what the spread was, and some of the main players. he said he gambled on the griz often. he also gamble on a whole lot of other teams often, too. so who knows, maybe more money gets bet on the griz than one would assume, given the size of the school, being fcs, etc...

I think following the NBA alleged betting scandal there will be attempts in future Congress's to regulate gambling in the NBA, other professional sports--NFL, MLB, NHL, etc. and that this could spill over to the NCAA and especially college football, basketball 🏀 and ⚾️ baseball, sports that could be more easily manipulated.

And I see these small-time Montana casinos actively promoting addiction through " free " food and drink specials, etc. While watching the NFL at a popular Billings sports bar, we would gather to watch the NFL playoffs. The bathroom was inside the casino next door. As we watched 2-3 playoff games over 6-9 hours, I noticed the same gamblers sitting at the same machines, mindlessly putting quarters in, and many of them were at those same machines--They were typically middle-aged to senior women.--sitting there for 3 to 6 to even 9 hours. If that isn't addiction, I don't know what is !!!

And these gambling addictions often are co-occurring with other addictions, for example, alcoholism, nicotine and/or drug addiction, and often lead to crime, including white-collar crimes like embezzlement.

While this is small time compared to the high-tech sophistication, the amount of $ involved, including Mafia crime families such as the Gambino family in NYC, in the alleged NBA gambling ring that was just exposed, gambling addiction in Montana is a big problem, and I wouldn't be surprised at all if that involves fans gambling on UM football and basketball. I would be surprised 😮 if it involved UM player's and coaches like the NBA allegations, but maybe I am just being naive. ( I am hoping NIL money 💰 would help guard against our student athletes from colluding to fix games, and bonuses tied to team performance both on the field and in the classroom for coaches but again, maybe I am being naive : ( . )

On a side note wistrchill brought this up at big sky media days as the dollars bet on Big Sky games last year was staggering and trying to ensure that this doesn’t seep into games is paramount for the conference.

Here’s a release earlier this month from the Montana Lotter for just 1 week. I would imagine with online sports books and other avenues this is just a drop in the bucket figure for each week.

FBI went to Cut Bank back in the 90s because of what appeared to be a large-scale sports gambling operation that included, at the time, some of the biggest coaches in college football, politicians, and other celebrities. They were shocked to learn that everything was done by hand in a tiny house by a well-intentioned teacher.

Where was this? When? Quarters in machines??? Those have gone the way of the Dodo.

SportsbetMT offers player props, but they only offer "Overs"....for example Eli Gillman will rush for OVER 115 yards this week. Or KAY passes for OVER 250 yards this week. Certainly players will the opponents strengths/weaknesses, they'll know the game plan, and will have an idea of what their stats might look like. BUT they wouldn't be able to intentionally tank like they were doing in the NBA.

Were they betting on the wild horse races at the local rodeos?
