Stop complaining about the OL and give them some love

Anyone complaining about Skyline Sports is a total idiot and not paying attention. I know they have some bobcat coverage but I'll be honest, I never even see it. Instead every week I get to listen to Big Sky breakdown with Colter and Brooks, Colter and Jordan Tripp, Sammy Akem, Tuesdays with Tootell, and the annoying yet admittedly Griz Homer Andrew Schmidt. I catch Colter's daily show on the app every once in awhile, mostly for the Monday Montana football hour, but that show covers a lot of Montana high school sports, including the Missoula schools. While some of those shows do feature some talk about the FCS at large and the cats also, it's pretty much Griz-centric. Go find me another FCS team with this kind of coverage. I'll wait.

You clearly do not understand competition, or you wouldn't make a preposterous comment such as this. If you think the griz with an entirely new starting defense, a new ans young qb, and an inexperienced WR group shouldve just automatically rolled through everyone, you're a uninformed "fan". SDSU was getting rolled at Youngstown state until the midway point of the 4th qtr. NDSU was down to Indiana state, then only ahead 10-7 @ half, the same Indiana state team we throttled. I am part of the fan base, and this team, with their 7-0 start, has underwhelmed me zero percent. Not one bit.

Of course, they do disagree at times.

I also don't like negative comments from people who act like they know what they are talking about, when they clearly don't.

I like to support the team and players, and don't like posters, especially ones who clearly don't know what they are talking about, unfairly dissing players or coaches. My goal is to limit "discussion" and comments that unfairly criticize players and coaches. Many experts on the board are not snarky. That sounds like a comment that a non-expert would make.

Years ago, Joe Glenn came over to me in a bar and introduced himself. Said he had heard I was Green26 and just wanted to say thanks for supporting and sticking up for the team. After the season, I got a National Championship poster sent to me, which had been signed a bunch of people, with many of them addressing their signature to Green26. I liked that.

The offensive line is not the problem. As tougher matchups approach, this unit will be key to sustaining success.

I also don't understand the comparison between Hauck 1.0- Hauck 2.0 as the offensive schemes were wildly different and that produces different talent standards for positions.

Hauck 1.0- Pro Style
  • Under Center
  • I formation
  • Power run game
  • Play action pass was more prevalent
  • TE's were used more for blocking/more arrow and shorter routes
  • Slow tempo
  • More pocket passers during this time
Hauck 2.0- Spread/RPO/Multiple
  • Shotgun
  • Spread formations
  • Zone blocking scheme. Requires athletic lineman who can climb to backers, or get out to corners and safeties in screen game.
  • QB has to be more of a dual threat
  • Faster pace

Absolutely spot on. This is great analysis and commentary, WITHOUT calling out a position group for poor play. This could also apply to the comparison to sdsu and ndsu. They run the power run, vastly different. Well done here 💪💪🙌

Montana played from the shotgun in Bobby 1.0. How about the entire final drive of the 2009 semi-final game? Did you watch a game?

Shotgun was completely situational. They were tied with less than 3:00 to play. Watch the game again and you will notice we are under center majority of game.

"Deep playoff runs" for many who know football and Griz football are home wins in rounds 1, 2 or 3 . In an FCS with about 8 (or 3 or 4?) true contenders most years.

Then, in a road semi or title game.......the Griz will need more physical line play on both sides to compete with one of 3 or 4 teams that will always be there.

And stronger line play on both sides will be the narrative following Griz a loss.

They sure did against North Dakota. I know you're gonna say we won that game so that's proof that they're enough. But you're not going to win many games where you rush for less than 2 yards per carry and give up 6 sacks. We should be using games like those against North Dakota as the measuring stick of how well Montana is able to assert itself running the ball because it's those caliber of defenses that we'll need to beat on Nov. 22 and late in the playoffs

That was my favorite game I’ve attended, that one and the NDSU game in ‘23. I was in the student section when Tru batted down the pass to win the game. One of my all time favorite Griz game memories was watching Sambrano haul in that pass right in front of the student section. Just a ridiculously epic game. That was FCS football at its peak. Still can’t believe we didn’t win either of those Nattys in ‘08 or ‘09 😔

If you filter those for conference only games, Montana is 6th in rushing yards per game (161.7), 9th in ypc (3.9) and has given up the fourth most sacks (7). We haven't really faced a defense that we're going to need to beat in late November or December. That concerns me. It might not concern you or others

Shouldn't we filter in the North Dakota game though? That's a pretty good defense and comparable to what you'll see in December, and I remember Gillman having a decent game against them.

If you're brining that game in, yeah Gilman had a solid game 82 yards on 16 carries. But we also gave up 6 sacks and a lot of other pressures. I don't know how those results makes you feel, but I wouldn't add it to my highlight reel

That is true, I'll give you that. I'm not defending the OL cause I do see many of the same concerns that you see, but I do remember in that UND that Ah Yat was a bit tentative for most of the game and I do remember thinking some of those sacks may have been on him. At the time, he was still holding onto the ball for longer than he should have.
