...to determine the GRIZ do not belong at the FCS level:

In seven games this season, Sacred Heart has played in front of 30,177 fans. Total.

Take away the "crowd" of 8127 at Norfolk, and in the other six games combined they've played in front of just over 22,000.

How many times does this have to be discussed. Yes UM football brings in 25kish a game but unless you are going to build another stadium and grow 25kish more people to fill it, moving to FBS would likely bankrupt the University. Why, because to move to FBS and be competitive UM would have to offer the same amount of scholarships as other FBS programs, which is now up to 105; an increase of 42 over the existing 63. When that happens, UM would have to increase women's scholarships by the same number of scholarships. That means adding women's sports. With the move up to FBS not only would the school have to support more scholarships, it would have to be able to cover the increased travel costs for the increased sports. The sports added, along with everything but Football and Men's Basketball, will never fund themselves. For example, this weekend, UM set its attendance record for VB playing its biggest rivalry game with 3,000ish. Creighton set the attendance record for VB with over 17,000 watching it play Nebraska and it plays most of its game in the VB arena that sells out with 3,000.

That is just for starters. This doesn't even deal with other issues like NIL, which UM donors could never fund to a level that would make it competitive at the FBS level or the requirements of the FBS conference it would join which may require even more sports than those necessary for the extra 42 scholarships to meet Title IX. Bottom line, if you look at schools in lower population areas or smaller schools in areas with other major Universities, their Football programs are either FCS or do not exist.

Only to a many Griz fans. Not to the criteria of being FCS or FBS.
Money matters. Hence, attendance matters.

And if it doesn't, why do so many people claim that UM will fail because we don't have a large enough population, and that we'll be down to 15,000 in attendance if we go 6-6? Seems to me you can't have it both ways.

For Montana, attendance does matter because they are currently limited on ways to raise funds. They have less opportunities to generate money when attendance declines. There are many examples of athletic departments that are currently in FBS that don't rely on attendance to the same degree because they are funded more by state government support, student fees, etc.

I’m confused: So attendance isn’t something that matters, but it is something that matters only to many Montana fans, but it also matters to Montana’s program because it’s a main source of funding, so in the end, the statement that it isn’t something that matters is incorrect? Did I follow that?

Seems not based on the original context that just because Sacred Heart has low attendance that Montana should be FBS with its attendance. And that Montana is more reliant on attendance for finances than most because they lack the ability to make up any deficit with other sources. But other than that, you nailed it.

Wednesday night of last week I because a convert to the “don’t move up” crowd.

I turned on my TV and saw a game that couldn’t have had 2500 people in the stands. It really would be sad if we ended up in a conference that required midweek games and we saw attendance plummet because none of the out-of-towners could make the game…I guess it (moving up) ain’t gonna happen in my lifetime…and I’ve made peace with that.

The MAC is not "up".

Why do people (and I know you don't really qualify AZ) think Montana would be at that level? The defeatism is remarkable to me, particularly for people from the state of Montana and with the success our program has had.

Take the WAC - change the name to the Great Big Rivers Conference and have NDSU, UND, SDSU, USD, Wyoming, MSU, Montana, University of St. Thomas, Minnesota State University, and Idaho as members. If Wyoming can be FBS, why can't Montana and the rest of the schools?

Add Women's Hockey and Swimming and Diving.

Right now in the fcs, it's like this is Montana:

and it's plopped down in the middle of this:

I’m not sure there’s an option. So many fans that come to the game come from an hour or more away (many 4-6 hours or more). Those folks aren’t coming to a Wednesday or Thursday game…Missoula proper can’t support the Griz by themselves. Sorry…but reality set in…I think the real reality is that the only viable option is the MWC and that likely will never happen…so, best to excel at our current level.

Wyoming can because they are the ONLY college with athletics in the entire state.

If you all hear Haslem talk on this at the tailgate show before the first game, the BoR is going to tie the two universities together, so whatever you calculate that it would cost one school to move up, double it because they would have to add on as well to make the move.

Oh boy!! I simply cannot wait to host Southeast Nebraska School of the Nazarene in the national semis in 3 years!!

Try one of the Dakota schools. It was NDSU in the last semi game in Missoula. Maybe App St before that. When did UM ever host a bad semi? Stick with tennis.

If the day of the week is what drives things, and the opponent is irrelevant, and winning is the main reason people show up, we should definitely go the Globetrotter/Savannah Banana route. The Bananas sold more tickets for their exhibition at Angel Stadium than the Angels did all season.

Given what I’m learning about fans’ expectations and parameters, I’m not even 100% joking. An FCS championship crowns what, the 50th best CFB team? Just play exhibitions and cash in!
