Cignetti - former JMU coach

Pretty remarkable that coach Cignetti now has Indiana University as one of the top three ranked teams in college football and they just beat the Oregon ducks in Eugene on Saturday.

You may recall, he helped JMU reach its pinnacle before they transitioned into FBS. And he has made Indiana pretty darn good since taking over. Dude can obviously coach.

He is a good coach that learned under Nick Saban. He can come off as obnoxious in pressers but it works for getting more attention to a smaller program relative to their Big 10 peers.

He already has Indiana at a fairly dominating level. Why leave? Hes already a millionaire, hes already built the culture. Personally I would find it more rewarding to just keep kicking blue blood teams asses with an upstart football program. I never understood leaving something you built for a program like Penn St etc

Speaking of JMU, I just went to their website to see what Matt Sluka was doing. He was the very good Holy Cross QB who went to UNLV and started last fall for several games. Then, got mad about his NIL and quit. Looks like he should have stayed at UNLV last year. His HC coach went to JMU, so he had a connection there. JMU is 5-1.

Penn State could probably pay twice as much as Indiana can.

Personally I think this is a BS move by Penn State to fire their coach and go after new coaches in the middle of the season. James Franklin had been there for over 10 seasons and took them to the CFP last year but they won’t let him finish off the season.

Why let him finish if you are going to fire him? Why would he stay if he knows that he is getting fired?

Works we live in. Carousel is going faster and faster and with only one window probably helps to have the coach hired and in the building before other teams are done with their season. Will be a problem for someone trying to poach Cignetti given Indiana will be favored in all remaining games until the B1G championship game.

I was wondering if there would have been a way to avoid the $50 million buyout, but keeping him for awhile. Probably not. See below.

"In 2021, Franklin signed a 10-year contract that paid him $7 million per year in annual compensation plus a $1 million annual loan for life insurance. There were also incentives and retention bonuses in Franklin’s contract, but only his annual compensation and loan are part of the buyout.'

I know.

Cignetti has an 8 year contract that pays $72 million at Indiana. Game set match IMO hes never going to need more money in his lifetime. To me there is no difference between 72 million and 500 million. You are never gonna spend all of that. I know everyone is different just speaking for me.

I would rather kick your ass with Indiana than Alabama for twice as much money. Its a little more insulting IMO

You might be right about the money aspect being enough for most, but Cignetti’s “All I do is win, google me” bravado might drive the bus on this decision (assuming he’s offered).

I get that you said, to you, there is no difference between $72M and $500M but to people like Cignetti, there's a difference. Why else would we have players holding out for the largest contracts in the history of their respective sports?

Yes, absolutely, I heard on Saturday the calls would be coming for Franklin's job but that Penn State couldn't afford the buy out, so that was WAAAAAAAYYYYYYY off.
If they are going to go after coaches at midseason though, what is to stop roster tampering next? I just don't believe the NCAA has the teeth any more to stop any of it though.
