Play-Calling and Pease

I don't complain about play-calling and know that I don't know much about it.

But I liked the play-calling against ISU. There were times when I thought the plays had just been great. There were times when I had no idea what the Griz were going to do.

There was certainly some nice play-calling by Pease. Congrats to Pease. Maybe he does know what he's doing. Maybe all of those big schools where he was the OC actually did him some good. Ha.

Absolutely. Our run game with Eli was not working for whatever reason and Pease had to get creative which he certainly did. It’s one thing to have a gadget in your pocket, but it’s whole ‘nother thing to have the ballz to call multiple gadgets and have them work. Along with all the other wildcat and double moves, etc.

What I found most impressive was the two fourth down calls. Again, ballzy. But also brilliant. Speed option to the boundary with Eli, and z-motion with money Mike. Both are very high percentage plays for short yardage with your superstars

ISU had loaded up the box to stop the run and Elil. And they had an aggressive safety coming up to stop the run. That DL guy of ISU was a beast and very good player too.

I doubt ISU loses players they want to keep. Hawkins 2.0 is turning the program around quickly. That includes the formerly apathetic and cynical fanbase, which is fired up over this team.
I think we have an advantage in that regard, if we could grab Wortham I think we could do the same with alot of great talent around the Big Sky.

Total adjustments . Got the ball into the best athletes's hands possible. Gillman yeah, but then Wortham. He made plays that we haven't seen. Plays that carry teams beyond expectations. I think Eli is the best player in the FCS, but Wortham is the guy that's gonna get the Griz over the top. He's the wild card. Mark my words the Griz will win with Wortham.

You may be right, but don’t discount the power of a few NIL dollars, a phenomenal fan base and stadium, plus winning! Lots of winning. Drive around Pocatello as well. It’s a no brainer unless the kid is getting a big check to stay there or has some weird connection to the school. Hawkins is doing a good job. He isn’t a miracle worker though. Not a lot to work with there and then he will be gone at the first opportunity for a better job.

I love the fact that EVERY time Wortham has gotten the ball in wildcat he's run it...until Saturday. Now teams will have NO idea whether he's gonna run or pass.

Absolutely LOVED the double reverse fleaflicker to the QB. And the double pass to a wide open TE in the end zone. Those two plays broke ISU's backs....

Wide open is the understatement of the year so far.

Wortham may be making most of those calls look good.

That play to Gale was based on tendencies of Idaho State's defense in previous games. The play execution was perfect, but it all started with identifying from video and inserting that type of play into the gameplan.

I'll admit to some frustration at the first and ten runs with Gilman that go nowhere. But unless you're a genie, you don't know beforehand if those are going for 0 or 10+ yards. You've got to stick with your identity. If you're not pounding them for 1 or 2 yards in the first quarter, you won't get the 10 yarders in the fourth.

Those critical down calls have been pretty damn good this year. I remember in 2022 it seemed like we could never convert third or fourth and short because the play call was so predictable.
