Five ranked teams lost yesterday, four of them to other ranked teams. The only big changes in the rankings will probably be Rhode Island, plus #24 Youngstown State could slip out of the top-25.
Rank Guess, Team (Record), Current Rank
1. NDSU (5-0) [1]
2. SDSU (5-0) [2]
3. Tarleton State (6-0) [3]
4. Montana (5-0) [4]
5. Montana State (4-2) [5]
6. UC Davis (4-1) [7]
7. Lehigh (6-0) [9]
8. Southern Illinois (4-1) [10]
9. Tennessee Tech (5-0) [11]
10. Illinois State (3-2) [6]
11. Idaho (2-3) [12]
12. Monmouth (4-1) [14]
13. North Dakota (3-2) [15]
14. Rhode Island (4-2) [8]
15. Jackson State (4-1) [17]
16. Villanova (3-2) [18]
17. NAU (4-2) [13]
18. Abilene Christian (2-3) [19]
19. Lamar (4-1) [20]
20. West Georgia (5-1) [16]
21. South Dakota (3-3) [21]
22. Austin Peay (4-2) [22]
23. Presbyterian (5 - 0) [23]
24. Harvard (3-0) [25]
25. Mercer (4-1) [NR]
Youngstown State (3-2) [24]
Given that the Montana teams were only 14 points apart in the last poll, it would not surprise me to see them flip-flop positions in the next.
The first actual loss by a ranked team was Illinois State getting doubled up by NDSU. The fact that it was a home game for them may hurt a bit. Still, I would guess that they will drop, but stay in the top-10.
The same cannot be said for Rhode Island, which lost to unranked Brown. The Bears other win was over a weak Georgetown team and they got pummeled by Harvard. Meanwhile, the Rams compiled their four wins against a schedule of cupcakes (with a combined 4-16 record). I think the Rhodies will take a major hit, dropping out of the top-10 to perhaps as low as #14 or 15. The gap they leave will allow several teams to move up a spot.
The loss by Northern Arizona should not hurt them too much, given their much higher-rank opponent. However, the fact that they got trounced at home will cost them some. I’m guessing about a 4-spot drop.
Like the ‘Jacks, West Georgia lost to another ranked team, except that Austin Peay was lower than them in the rankings. Because of that, I’m guessing they too will drop about four spots. The pollsters might shuffle Austin Peay ahead of them, but that doesn’t happen all that often. (Strange, that’s how it seems to work … or not work.)
My final choice poses a bit of a quandary. Youngstown State, playing at home, came within 6 points of upsetting #2 SDSU. Will that be enough to keep them in the top-25? Their other loss was to a decent FBS opponent. Trouble is, their wins came against a very weak schedule (combined record of 6-11). I’m fairly sure they will drop out.
I would expect them to be replaced by Mercer, the top “Other Receiving Votes” in the last poll … and they won their game handily.
