Griz Fan Radio - Dr Luke Wood, president of Sacramento State joins us

Sac will find a way into the FBS at some point. It’s a big population center with some natural FBS rivalries. How long that takes, how many bridges they burn and embarrassment they suffer between now and then is the unknown. Certainly off to an inauspicious start.

Listened to the pod. He’s out of his mind. Their plan is either going to fail miserably and/or take 20+ years to achieve. They have a big student base and a top 20 TV market, that’s it. There’s about 98 other things they have to get right, most importantly building a consistently winning football team against FBS.

Awesome you guys got this interview, and the like many on here I'm a bit skeptical but hope things work out for them. Won't lie, a part of me wishes we were more vocal and aggressive about moving up so I am a bit envious of that aspect.

I’m halfway through this and I’m not sure… there are a LOT of assumptions being made by this guy. He seems genuine, but he also screams snake oil salesman too.
I agree, I totally got the snake oil salesman vibes. Really enjoyed the interview and questions. Great job GFP getting Dr. Wood on the air! Enjoy the President box Brint 😁🐻

Dr wood is spot on in his analysis, i can't disagree with anything he said. He's smart and articulate, ans id say the only think hes outlandish on is sac stats current status in fcs, they are definitely not among the top echelon, but who cares? They do have the media market, size of academic institution etc, there's actually no reason why they shouldn't or couldn't be fbs, especially in this world of NIL and ability to construct a roster and recruit athletes. His perspective is a breath of fresh air, appreciate the guy after listening to him.

The dude absolutely believes in himself and in his plan. He does cherry pick some examples in it for sure.
His "go get it" attitude definitely won me over. Its obvious he's a salesmen. Its also obvious he's not 100% how to get the job done, such as when Kyle doubled down on Dr Woods plan to get into the Pac12. His main tool is his knowledge of wat Sac has the potential to offer and his positive, failure not an option, attitude.

I also noticed he was trying very hard to recruit Montana through the Pod to join him, maybe a strength in numbers mentality. PR is right though in that he might not understand the big picture. We don't have the media, the enrollment numbers, the alumni donor money, or the non football fans support for a move like that.

Gonzaga Basketball went 8-20 in 1990. By 2000 they were a top 25 team, and have been ever since. Sure Basketball is different, but if you told anyone in 1990 "Gonzaga will be a top 10 team every year some day" they would have called you a clown as well. He has a tough road ahead, but he has the right attitude, and loves his school.
A comparison that is in no way similar.

lol, for real - right now Sac State students pay $231 per year in Athletics Fees, that’s with the $75 increase from 2024. That’s 8% of the JMU fee, $2600+!

Like I said, Sac State is a bargain in every aspect (thanks taxpayers!), especially in California $$$.
$2.6k in fees a year? That's insane and about a third of the total yearly tuition to attend EWU when I went there in the early 2000s lol.

I would be concerned that Sacramento's success seems to depend on a single individual. That arrangement can't last forever.
But just going FBS isn't impossible. Many teams do.

Re. the JMU athletics fee ... well there is a difference. While JMU is not a rich kids school, a lot of the families are solidly middle class. They can afford fees which help keep their kids well-entertained while at college.

As Wood pointed out, a lot of Sac State students are first in their families to go to college and struggle financially. During advising, we encourage them to limit their outside job(s) to no more than 20 hours per week. But so many work more to pay the bills. I wonder if your typical JMU student is working 25 hours per week with a 15-unit academic schedule and family obligations on top of that.

A $75 or $100 fee increase may not seem like much, but it is to many of our students. And in the aggregate, well $100 times 30,000 students is $3 million. Dr. Wood wants that money for his purposes. If you’re on campus, you know that most students don’t want what he wants; they want that $3 million going to getting their classes back.

It's hard to say who's right. It's at least relevant that State athletics, even before those fee increases, was highly, highly subsidized, estimated at 84%, one of the highest subsidization rates around. That’s California tax dollars and student fees at work. A pretty good deal for the athletic department.

Typical classes this semester - for students who are able to get them - have a 40 student to 1 instructor ratio. No TA’s, no graders. Football has at most 4 players for each coach. Check out the Sac State sideline next game; the number of coaches (a “swarm” per a local sportswriter) is incredible, the highest paid staff ($2.7 million before incentives) in FCS by far. You can’t really fault Brennan Marion. In an interview he said, “I kept asking … and Mark Orr and Dr. Wood kept saying yes.” It makes quite an impression, even for someone like myself, a former D1 athlete who loves his sports. And the students notice all this.

It's interesting times. Dr. Wood is high energy and charismatic. He would face so much less anger and resentment on campus if he stopped saying to the public that the students support this FBS push and that he has no capacity for redirecting future Category II fees.

First in family to go to college here, picked Sac State because they had D1 athletics, over other CSUs and a couple UCs. Like it or not - Basketball and Football drive university reputations/revenue.

Your reasonable and well thought out response has no place on message boards. 😂

See you at the next Block S tailgate.

I plan to be so obnoxious
I hope you really do take him up. Honestly, Dr. Wood has put as much lipstick on the pig of a game experience at Hornet Stadium as he can. Hopefully you’ll take note of some of the changes in just one year.

The last time I was at a Sac game was 2004 - but it was in that stadium... not sure if I'll recall much from the prior visit!

‘05? Remember Lex Hilliard just breaking 1,000 tackles. Also, there were probably like 5,000 people there lol. Friday night is a rough one this year, hope we double that.
