Griz vs DSUs

Kitty nation is lamenting on whether or not they are at the same exact level of the DSUs (NDSU and SDSU). Sugar coater Tom Stuber claims they are every bit and that they’ve just had a run of bad luck (he literally said like flipping a coin heads 10 times in a row). Others who are more realistic there have said until they start beating them, then no they aren’t there yet. Keep in mind they are 1-11 vs the DSUs over the last several years.

I think the cats have a great program and a great team and I think they are the upper echelon of FCS. I think the Griz are right there as well. But I do not agree that they’ve had just a run of bad luck. I don’t think 1 and 11 is a random coincidence.

It made me curious to look up how the Griz have fared. We are 3-4 vs DSUs since 2015. Stitt beat both NDSU and SDSU his inaugural year. Found it interesting.
 
SDSU in 2015 was not the same team as they are now but the Griz are closer than the Cats. The problem for the Cats is their coach “big game” Brent Vigen always chokes the big games which include against DSU.
 
I mean at least we can beat NDSU on occasion. We're 2-2 against them in the last ten years. We haven't seen them on a neutral field yet but we've beat both times they've come to Missoula. SDSU on the other hand has had our number. neither of those games the last two years have really been all that close. We gotta figure it out against them.

Tom Stuber should be renamed Tom Stupid. Most of my Bobcat family and friends in Bozeman don't agree with him on the above subject.They are more realistic. The Cats are not at the level of the top Dakota schools and have never been there. They got close last year, with Tommy. They are likely to fall back this year, is my view at this time. The Griz haven't been there either. At least, the Griz beat NSDU at home in Missoula, which the Cats didn't do and then didn't do last week with SDSU. Did Stuber play football

Wow, 1-11 against the Dakota schools. How can anyone look at those stats and the recent games, and conclude what Stuber said? That's my one of my big gripes with some Bobcat fans. They don't live in reality. Pretty funny. I like to make fun of them.
 
I know you are all waiting for my opinion on this (you aren't) so here you go...

1-11 is the only stat that truly matters. If you want to be at their level, you need to beat them. Have the last 2 SDSU games been close? Yep, One came down to a toe size, and the latest was a loss in 2 OT... Does that matter? not really. If you want to be considered anything more than the 3rd or 4th best FCS team every year, than you need to win those games, especially at home. Are we "Close"? Maybe, but that doesn't count for much when you are walking out of a stadium not celebrating. Time will tell if the rest of this season works out for a rematch with one/both the DSU's and, if it does, we will all see how it goes. But as of now, the odds show it will still end the same.

Odds are starting 0-2 that any rematch will happen in one of the Dakotas. Not a recipe for success...

Good post. I agree. Being close is meaningful in that it means you are close, in some years. But, as you say, it shows you aren’t there. And there have been years where you weren’t even close. Same with Griz. At least, Griz have won more games. But that doesn’t cessations mean the Griz are closer. The Dakota schools are tough and moved ahead of the pack. That’s okay. I like FCS and the top of FCS.

I’m in an alternate universe over there these last few days. Some act like I’m saying the Cats are shit because I’m stating the obvious that we don’t belong in the same tier as the DSU’s.

I think the Cats are a great program. I think we run the table until Missoula. I think we have a shot at a nice playoff run. But if we can’t beat the Dakotas, and we don’t win championships like the Dakotas, how in the hell would we be considered in the same tier of the Dakotas?!!

100% agree. We're in the 3-4 teams in that 2nd tier, but none have moved up to or past either of the Dakota States...nor been at their level at any time in the past 5-7 years.
 
The Montana Grizzlies and Coach Hauck are the wins leader for the Big Sky in the annual Big Sky vs the Missouri Valley Challenge series, entering the contest against North Dakota at 6-2 in regular season meetings against teams from the MVFC since the series began in 2018 – Hauck's first season back at UM. Including FCS playoff games, the Griz still lead the valley 7-5 in that time as well. Montana has had the most wins over teams from the MVFC in the series by far, with Weber State the only other Big Sky team to earn more than two wins since 2018 with three.
