Good Bad Ugly - Central Wash

Good: Running Game looked amazing, Wortham will be a stud, 2nd half defense/adjustments, AhYat made some good plays (approve of the sliding especially).

Bad: Tackling in the first half, not setting the edge, DL pressure overall needs to improve, some forced throws by AhYat and not necessarily "bad" but he needs to tweak his deep ball touch a tiny bit more.

Ugly: Pass play inside the 5 yard line on 1st and goal after running the ball with impunity the entire drive. Can't leave points on the field and as mentioned we can't afford to dissappear for an entire Half against UND like last season.

KA is soo much better outside the pocket.
I don’t know if it’s the o line or his height or what but he doesn’t seem comfortable in the pocket.
Maybe you saw something different
I will admit that he is vertically challenged in the pocket, but it he can get a bit more loft on the ball without sacrificing accuracy, he will be great!

Rewatching the game. It looks like the D line got washed down a lot due to stunting in the first half. Calling a bit more vanilla plays on D should shore that up front. It looked like the guys were thinking too hard and not reacting/playing fast with confidence.

Agreed. If these guys can play man up or draw a double at the nose or end positions in any formation involving TE’s with any bit of upfield push and just let our linebackers athleticism take over we will be fine. Hoping we see a little more of Baers mark as the analyst this week and getting our defensive game plan started.

Also liked that it appears we are fast and physical enough to play man free or cover 0 in the back end so those crazy blitz schemes. Looking forward to seeing Diezel coming downhill or off the edge more as well.

The D-line is in trouble!
Explain what you mean here. This is an unqualified statement to just put out this phrase without further detail.

What I heard, as I listened to the radio feed from Wakiki, was that the defense struggled in the first half, but Greg Sunberg explained somewhere ahead of the half that there was no film from CWU on their game the week before, they opted not to share because we had no film to give to them since we had not played a game yet. Sure, the defense gave up a lot in the first half, but they went into the locker room, made the adjustments that are expected from a Bobby Hauck team, and shut them out in the second half.

Sounds like we need to see how we do the next two weeks before making a statement that the D-line is in trouble at best, but from what I was getting on the radio play by play, what needed to get corrected was corrected against a decent opponent.

I didn't think he was uncomfortable in the pocket. Much improved since last year. Throws a nice ball (most of the time).
Well if the Fighting Hawks are coming to town - we will see if in or out of the pocket works. As a life long Griz Fan I skeptical!!!!

What does being a lifelong Griz Fan have to do with this year's Griz team playing the Fighting Hawks, or vice versa?

Good: Griz win,
Bad: I was at a wedding
Ugly: I have another wedding next weekend
Wear white in solidarity with the bride. They love that. Better yet, wear an all white Griz uniform from Saturday’s game. That way, she’ll see you’re in her corner (wearing white like her 🤝) and that you really want to be there because she’ll be reminded of the game being played at exactly the same time that she scheduled her wedding. It’s really the least you can do.

Or, just phone in a bomb threat to the wedding venue like I di…like I considered when a friend scheduled a Saturday wedding in September.

I don't agree that they are in trouble. The DE's are good or very good, including the transfers from Carroll. The nose guys looked fine so far. Yes, everyone knows Gubner was great and we'd be better with him at nose. It was the first game in a fairly complicated defensive scheme that requires considerable coordination. These guys need time to learn the D better and work with each other. There is alot of talent in the linebackers. They need to learn to play better too, and they surely will. The DL is in trouble. What a dumb comment.
Learning the D and playing together doesn't give you talent. What a dumb statement!

We should have dominated up front on defense vs. that level of talent. I didn't see that. But there's really no need to debate how effective the defensive line might be because they are going to get an opportunity to prove just how good they are this Saturday.

104 yards and no points in 2d half is pretty good.

In the September 2025 game against Central Washington, Montana's defense gave up 104 total yards of offense in the second half
.
Here is a more detailed breakdown of Central Washington's performance in the second half of the 42-17 loss:
  • The Wildcats were shut out, unable to score any points in the third or fourth quarters.
  • While Central Washington did have a few drives, including one set up by an interception, they were ultimately stalled by the Grizzlies' defense, which forced a turnover in the end zone and other key stops.“

Good: Whatever coaches said at halftime to our defense

Really Good: Gillman, Wortham, Ah Yat, Rocker Jr., Deck, others. I feel like we have a more dynamic offense than last year.

Bad: Why oh Why put Wortham out to return punts in the 4th quarter, up two scores, agains a D2 opponent? Needless risk that resulted in a tough hit on him.

Really Bad: Enough of the "MC" guy on the mic during timeouts. How about just show some scores from around the league or some game highlight replays?

Good:
  • Running back depth and athleticism. Wow.
  • 7 of 12 on 3rd downs.
  • 8 different players with a reception.
  • Michael Wortham. What a versatile dude.
  • Ty Morrison, the do-it-all kicker/punter. 6/6 on XPs, 3 touchbacks on kickoffs, and 51 yard punt.
Bad:
  • 8 penalties for 85 yards, 3 of which gave CWU a 1st down and 1 that erased a TD
  • Red zone interception - major momentum killer
  • No clear leader on the defensive side of the ball

I'm good with you thinking we dominated at level one on defense...we just disagree. I stand by my statement that we will find out more clearly this week.
