Bobby Hauck names the starting QB Keali'i Ah Yat

Stats like that are hard to argue with. Let’s just hope the kid is like most collegiate athletes. They are like a fine wine and get better with age. Sometimes a year makes a big difference. The game slows down, kids are able to start making reads and see what the defense is doing, they put some weight on and mature. I hope all is true for KA.
They understand how certain defenses will react to certain plays and they start to spot the patterns that develop during the game which helps them anticipate. They understand how a certain defensive pressure look may not happen because the pressure defender is putting too much weight on their front foot while they notice that corner squatting a little too low and turning their hips inside trying to hide and prepare themselves for a corner blitz. At the same time, the OLs, WRs, TEs, and RBs need to be on the same page.

Now that right there is funny because Bobby never named a starting quarterback until Tuesday of this week.
You think no one knows or can have an opinion, until the coach makes a public announcement? That's pretty funny. Hauck may not have done so publicly, but of us paying attention and talking to the coaches most knew that Ah Yat would be the starter, as along as he was healthy.

Absolutely. He has a lot of talent, and I believe he can and will be better. Don’t need to sugarcoat last season either. It was bad.

Good to great for a freshman?

Excluding some garbage time stats against SDSU’s backups at the very end of the game, these were his cumulative stats against teams with a winning record (6 games):

484 passing yards, 1 TD, and 5 interceptions. That was with Bergen, White, Raccanelli, Fontes, and Eli Gilman on the roster. Two WR’s who are playing professionally, and another in a P4 conference now. He wasn’t lacking for talent around him.
I don't necessarily disagree with the idea that Keali'i needs to step up his game as the starter this year, but I see people are still telling this lie because they're just saying things they believe to be true. They pulled their starters after we scored the TD to Racanelli. I've documented this in several threads since that game on here.

It's also pretty telling how some Griz fans watched that SDSU game without seeing the extremely promising things Ah Yat did that day against by far the best defense we saw all season, but I've also gone over that countless times on here. On that SDSU TD in particular, he sold the out to Harris perfectly, then dropped a dime over their best cover corner, the kind of pass we hardly saw all season from either guy. I get it, it's easier to just read the box scores.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but unless he can also contribute heavily on the ground, I think #8 needs to throw for 25+ TDs and less than 10 INTs this season if we want to compete for a national championship. If he hits those numbers or better, I'd bet we go pretty far.

I though you could read beings you claim to be a lawyer ? The title of the thread :

You're cherry picking the data to skew to his disadvantage. It was not "bad". He was a freshman with an average run game and BAD defense. His performance, when in games was very solid. The Portland state game was rough. He played very well in several games. I get your point, but the overall body of work was good. He needs to be better, but of course he will because *** news flash*** its the natural progression of an athlete. I believe the run game will be better significantly, our defense will be better significantly, and ah yat will be improved significantly. And I actually believe our skill positions will be improved this season. Take your candy ass negativity elsewhere. I don't sugarcoat.

The question isn't when Bobby named the starting QB. I thought the question was who was going to be the starting QB. You claimed to be the first to say that. Were you just saying that you were the first to post that Bobby named Ah Yat as the starting QB? Ha.

Can you explained what you meant by your comment? What did you "call"?

"I called it first."

Nothing was cherry picked. I didn’t even include the Portland State game you mentioned. Just teams that finished with a winning record. To me, that’s the true barometer for good players. Cal Poly, Morehead and the like aren’t true tests.

I agree with the optimism for the improved defense, I’m curious why you think the running game will be significantly better? It’s largely the same group, a little mixed around, added Matan and lost Casey. I realize that players should get better every year, but typically the largest gains in that regard are in their first couple years. So I can see better, but significantly? I’d love to hear your reasoning there.

More and better players on OL and a year older. Better coaching. Have you been to practice? The injuries seem to be with the younger players. Better QB play will help the OL and RB’s. QB play last year obviously wasn’t good enough and didn’t get to the level it needed to be. Everything I have heard about Ah Yat, and seen, looks good and promising, but we shall see and need him to be healthy. I like Jensen too. He is certainly solid. We need him to be healthy. If he needs to play, I could see him stepping up and growing quickly. But, like last year, I want to see qb play in some games first. I thought we had good QB play potential last year, but it never caught enough fire and became consistently good after Fife’s 2 big games. And we didn’t have the great D line the prior year. I am very hopeful for the D this fall, but again, we will have to see a few games. The coaches really like the LB’s. I think there’s talent in the DL and there are multiple good corners. I assume safeties too, but don’t know. Overall coach quality has increased.

Morehead finished with a winning record, FYI ;)

I know. That’s where the TD pass came from. I’ll fully admit it’s not a perfect barometer, as quite a few teams are better than Morehead but played in better conferences. Regardless, it gets the point across I think.

I’ll take your word that the pass to Racc was against starters as well.

Outside of perhaps intensity, what is Norcross teaching differently? Different technique? Scheme? Just better at teaching?

That's part of the problem with selecting a sample size to make your point, though, right? You can't take out games against weaker teams and then judge stats, because that isn't how ANY other QB is judged.

He also ran for 7 touchdowns and completed 60% of his passes. If I were to remove his bad games, his stats could look phenomenal. If you are trying to make an argument based on statistics, you are REALLY skewing it when you only take his games against stronger teams.

He was a freshman, so of course there are growing pains. He had a better completion percentage than Arch Manning in Arch's first start.

Flowers will be starting by the end of the year. Some players are just injury-prone, and Ah Yat is one of them. He bails too early and gets crushed running.
