Poor Portland State

What kind of contract did they give Barnum after going 9-3 in 2015? Unless the internet is lying to me that was the last time they had a winning record. How does a program keep a coach around for that long? Is he working for free?

It’s a good question. I think Bruce is just a good guy. Loves his kids and they love him. No major scandals and he’s a top notch PR guy. A bit of a Jerome Souers type.

It’s Portland State sports and his salary is low. I think it’s a bit of the old Soviet Union mentality, “They pretend to pay us and we pretend to work.”

The opposite approach would be Sac State’s, the Reverend, Dr. Woods, CBE, overpaying a 38 year old head coach that wears plus-sized headphones over a ridiculously large cowboy hat—and still loses.

Look I know Barny has a tough job over there with an under funded program and basically no resources, but nothing cures a Football program like winning. When does the AD decide it’s time to move on and try something else? I’d have to think at a minimum they could convince a somewhat successful D2 coach to take that job right? Barney hasn’t done anything respectable in a decade and has had a couple seasons like this that were really terrible (2017). I think it’s time to try something else.

Put Bobby Hauck in as head coach and tell me the results are any different. They wouldn’t be. Recruiting there is impossible. No fans, no stadium, no culture, no NIL money. Nope. It isn’t a coaching problem. It just isn’t.

Hot take but I just don’t think Barny is a very good coach. His defenses have never been worth a shit, and outside of the QB’s, he’s never been able to have any kind of success. I do think Bobby could do better there but ya it would still be a challenge.

Well it has to be a coaching problem at least a little bit.

Portland State has no resources. This program has been on the brink of being disbanded for decades. They have virtually no recruiting budget. They play at a stadium 15 miles away from their campus. There are a lot more obstacles for creating sustained success than most programs face.

and yet Robby continues to coach the ST and safeties there... can't be easy given the resources...

Unpopular opinion perhaps, but maybe PSU should consider dropping Football entirely (as D2 travel would be worse). They have 0 fan support, 0 facilities, 0 school support etc. I don't like any school losing the sport but maybe this would be a mercy, I know they and EWU have been struggling but at least the Eagles have a history of being good at times.
