NFL Practice Squad

Admittedly, I did not know a lot about an NFL practice team, how it worked, what the pay is, etc. Here is what I found out:

- An NFL team can sign up to 17 players on a practice squad (it used to be 5 when it first started many years ago)
- a practice squad player does everything a normal player does, practice, film, food, travels with the team to the games but they do not suit up and stay in street clothes
- they make $13,000 per week if they are in year one or two and they make $17,000 per week if they are beyond year 2
- They will get paid for all 18 weeks regardless of how long they are on that practice squad
- a practice squad player has no effect on salary cap

I believe they only get paid when they are on the practice squad roster.

In reality the maximum number of players is 16, because if a team has 17, one has to be an "international" player. None of whom have ever been promoted to the active 53 as far as I know.

I also found out if they are moved up to the active roster, they immediately start making the minimum salary which for a rookie is 840 K this would be prorated for the amount of time they are on the roster
A player can be activated twice to the gameday roster while still on the PS and will receive a gameday check based on the minimum scale.

It’s actually three times now

“Like the last two seasons, teams have more flexibility with using practice squad players on game day. PS players can be activated on game day before the team announces their inactives(90 minutes before game time). This can happen with up to two practice squad players per week, and the player doesn’t have to be elevated from the PS to the main roster for the move. Each practice squad player is now able to be elevated up to three times per season. To be activated a fourth time requires the player to be signed to the regular roster. During the playoffs, practice squad players have unlimited elevations.”

Does the rule for other teams taking someone from someone else's practice squad still require that the player go to the 53-roster for at least several (maybe 3) games?

report that Junior will be signed to the 49er's practice squad once he clears waivers...doesn't look like Tommy will be signed by Raiders (at least he's not listed on the initial list)

If I were Tommy I would look to go to a different team. The Raiders drafted him to change positions and then had him standing around during training camp and brought in Amari Cooper

Looks like Bergen, Mellott, Cook and Miller were signed by their teams to the practice squad. Haven't seen anything on O'Connell. I wonder if he's talking to other teams. Can't imagine he won't get offered by Seattle. Saw an article that speculated that Hardy, who was kept, could get dropped for someone else at Chicago. That may have been just someone's speculation. Braxton Hill went to the Hamilton practice squad a few days ago, after being released by Regina.

Mellott was not signed to the Raiders PS. Seattle has signed 3 other linebackers.

Remember that Tommy was added by Calgary and Dave Dickenson to the negotiation list.

"Each CFL team maintains a Negotiation List of up to 45 players who are currently either unsigned or are playing in the NFL, in another professional league, or in college. Teams hold exclusive CFL negotiating rights with players on their lists, and those players can be added, traded or removed at any time."

Tommy may be thinking he still wants to play QB instead of chasing an opportunity that might be limited to special teams. I am 100% speculating.

Does he want to play football that badly? If Tommy can’t make an NFL practice squad, using his financial engineering degree is probably a better long term move at-least financially.
