GFP - chat with Kent Haslam

Some of this fan base really needs to stop living in the past. Mick was great. Riley is great. You can take whichever position you want on Micks exit from the U on who was in the wrong. Both sides played a part in not coming to terms for another season which is bound to happen in any relationship. Regardless, there is no way with his medical situation and declining condition that he would have been able to do the job much longer.

Mick left a Montana legend and should always be remembered that way. Riley will be the voice associated with Griz football for the next generation. For those of us that have been through both and then some, appreciate the fact we have a program with more than one season to remember in our history and that there is a product worth listening to.

I really liked Mick, I was in high school when I first started to “sort of” pay attention to Griz FB, so I listened to him for several years. He was good, and I missed him for maybe 2 years before I started to really enjoy listening to R.C. We are lucky to have him, he’s outstanding and I hope he stays around for a long time. He’s orders of magnitude better than any other BSC broadcaster.
Riley is very good, but comes in second to Mitch Strohman.

My only beef with Riley is that he sometimes gets so involved in telling stories or stats about players that he forgets to tell what's happening on the field. It's obvious he cut his teeth in the video age, whereas Mick was an old school radio guy. He was PHENOMENAL at painting the picture so well with his words that we could see the onfield action in our minds eye. But both Mick and that era of radio announcers are gone forever, and complaining about Riley isn't going to bring them back..

If Riley is so awesome why hasn’t any larger program snatched up this great young talent??

(because he sucks)
He’s married to a great woman with a great job at UM, likes Missoula, and probably wants to raise his family in Missoula for awhile. See Justin Green. Many of us take huge pay cuts live in MT and move here. And you have no clue about what his opportunities have been.

Why are you a troll on egriz? Because you suck and have nothing going on in your life and never will. What a loser.

I think Riley is great, has a good/commanding voice, follows the pace of play really well, can balance excitement so it doesn't overtake the moment. Criticism that he doesn't have a Mussberger or Jackson type of catchphrase seems like an awfully high standard for an FCS radio job.

He puts in a lot of hours on prep - a few years back he brought in his 2 page broadcast sheet he builds each week so he has references to so many fast stats/info/features (photo here).
